Is there a B & B in York that has a good view of the ECML?

I'm sure if you had a trawl through the EC Hotel Booking Service they would list hotels as near as possible to stations, for convenience.

All the city centre ones will probably claim to be near the station, so that isn't going to work!

I can't think of any, sorry. Other than The Sidings... but that's not in York, quite a few miles north!

The ECML goes through York quite a bit away from main roads or parallel residential streets. There was once railway activity such as yards and depots pretty much all the way from Chaloners Whin to Skelton, and this means that any development built on it in recent years has tended to be light industrial or purely modern residential. There are lots of B&Bs in the area just north of the river through which the Scarborough line passes (road parallel to the railway is called Bootham Terrace, leading into Longfield Terrace at its southern end). From here you can see 185s if you like that sort of thing, plus the SSE when it's running (and hopefully not setting fire to York ). It's a two minute walk down to the river where you can see across to the ECML as it passes the NRM and the TPE depot. It's also a very pleasant part of the city in which to stay: check out the Minster pub in nearby Marygate.

My parents nearly bought the house adjacent to the footbridge near Holgate Junction in 1976. Had they done so I would have spent the next 5 years watching deltics from my bedroom window. As it was they bought a house not far away so I could could hear but not see them.

EDIT: Not sure if this might be a bit dear, but location-wise it's as good as it gets for railway views. http://www.beechhouse-york.co.uk/ Whatever, there are plenty of B&Bs in Bootham/Longfield Terrace.

To an EE starved fan who only heard 4SRKT's when visting grandparents, I would have loved that.

Coincidentally I also only heard 4SRKTs when visiting grandparents: in Carrickfergus! My childhood was spent in the constant earshot of quality EE traction. 37s pulling off Dringhouses Yard at night on Speedlinks were particularly splendid.

Was talking to an old spotter one day when working at York ststion and he was staying in the Holgate Bridge Hotel, which he said had rooms overlooking the railway. Think it is his annual trip out.

I can recommned a good one in Northallerton!

The Royal York has some rooms whihc have a view over the railway line. Look on my recent flickr for a picture. ( it isnt a b&b and i doubt it is cheap - sorry!)

I'd forgotten about the Holgate Bridge Hotel mentioned by 142094. That might be a good shout. Very handy for 'Railway York' in general. I only walked past it on the way to school for 7 years! D'oh!
