Ayr to York

A quick query as to the cheapest combination of tickets for a friend.

She's not sure of the date she wants to travel, or the exact time, so that rules out AP tickets. She is however probably going to travelling to York on the 13th March, and travelling back on the 14th.

The Off Peak Return (SVR) Ayr to York any permitted is £86.50. Travelling via Dumfries and Appleby (a long journey!) and splitting at Carlisle you could reduce this to two Anytime Returns (SOR) for a total of £67.20.

Someone else may well find something better!

Edit: actually there's also a Super Off Peak (SSR) Ayr to York any permitted for £84.20 which is fine at the weekend or after 09.30 Mon - Fri, or a Anytime Return (SOR) via Dumfries at £83.00.

Further edit: if the Dumfries and Appleby route appeals, then Ayr to Settle via Dumfries is £37.70 SOR and Settle to York is £22.00 SOR - total of £59.70.

Would a Ayr-Berwick-on-Tweed ticket be valid via York?

If so, the SVR is valid at any time and costs £43.00.

I haven't checked the Routeing Guide, but unless they've made an almighty blunder with it for this journey I can't see any way in which Ayr to Berwick could possibly be valid via York.

Same thought here, and EC's website won't allow that journey. Have you swapped around York and Berwick?

Ayr - Micklefield SOR (Route Appleby ) is £52.80
Ayr - Leeds Route SOR (Route Dumfries & Appleby) is £45.40

Saltaire-York SVR (valid any train) is £14.30

You are doubly valid between Saltaire and Micklefield (or 'only' between Shipley and Leeds unless you're on stoppers).

Yes it's cheaper to be doubly valid for part of your journey with split tickets, than to get one ticket. Crazy, but true, and no I am not surprised.

I can't beat that price, I can only beat it on the basis of having 2 valid tickets for about 35 miles at the same price of £59.70

Prestwick Atrain - Carlisle SVR £8.80 (Route Dumfries)

Then a Freedom of the North East 4 in 8 at £75.00

This is 80p more than the through via Dumfries fare, and for 80p you get unlimited travel for 4 days in the area You can also go via Newcastle or Appleby, and down to Sheffield if you want!

Or..

Prestwick Atrain - Carlisle SVR £8.80 (Route Dumfries)
Carlisle-York SOR £39.30 SOR (Route Appleby)
Total = £48.10

Only if they've made an error on the scale of that Slough to Reading (or whatever it was!) via Exeter

The Prestwick ATrain fares are only valid for airline passengers unfortunately, and an appropriate dated ticket or boarding pass needs to be presented to get those fares. This isn't stated in Avantix Traveller, but an obscure hint is that the NLC for "Prestwick ATrain" is H234, as opposed to 9544 for "Prestwick Intl".


Plus you would also need an Ayr to Prestwick ticket as well, because of where the Kilmarnock line diverges from the coastal route.

Can't argue with your discovery of being covered twice for part of the route on your example though

edit: but, yes, Ayr to Carlisle via Dumfries SVR* £17.60 and Carlisle to York via Appleby SOR £39.30 is a total of £56.90 (*didn't spot this one before!)

Isn't the origin 'Prestwick Atrain' used to indicate a special discounted fare for airline passengers arriving at Prestwick Airport (Prestwick Intl)? IIRC, a boarding card needed to be shown to get this fare.

I didn't know a boarding card was needed for that. Is that a reward for people who pollute the environment and depleat resources at the fastest possible rate? Perhaps there will be a 'modified car railcard' available for chavs soon

Unless this has changed very recently, it is a booking reference that is required for the prestwick a-train fare, a lot of passengers assume a boarding card is adequate but unfortunately not, discretion IS used widely with this, though expect a few sticklers if you ever travel this way. Great deal anyway, half price puts a fair dent in a wick return.
