That is to some extent a fair point, but the Pacers were new territory for a state-run company on a very tight budget, hence them ever existing in the first place. The Voyagers were a modern day train being designed and built with all the technology you could possibly want. There have been enough long distance trains of various types in various countries for the designers to appreciate from the outset that they are cramped, rattly and in no way as pleasant or civilised to ride in as their predocessors. I have to say that I think that's a pretty poor show. When you look at a Turbostar or Electrostar or Desiro etc, there have been several fleet builds of all of these to pretty much the same design and they all seem to have been essentially decent trains from the outset. The heavy, rythmic interior vibration on a departing Voyager is decidedly worse than on most of the 20 year old 158 sets that I work! A feature both trains do share however, is the sauna-like conditions in the vestibules on a warm-ish or worse day. On a train that is two decades old it is to some extent forgiveable, but what's the excuse on a Voyager?

You make a good point, but the constraints of Voyagers (125mph trains with a tilting profile needing a narrower "envelope", disabled toilets at seat plugs/entertainment...) was quite a change from the Mk3s etc.

Turbostars etc run slower and don't have tilt, meaning you can have a wider body.

The interior vibration on a departing Voyager is certainly noticeable, but you have to appreciate how quickly these things accelerate, its a trade off. Not ideal, and not ideal machines, but context is everything.

I use the Arriva Cross Country's Birmingham to Stansted service a few times and it's always been fairly reliable, my only gripe is them having to use 2 car trains when 3 car trains are the minimum needed.

Pity the 2 car 170s can't go elsewhere in return for more 3 car 170s but that's hardly going to happen now :(

Wasn't there a plan for LM centre coaches to move to XC (in return for LM getting all the 172s)?

158s are far more comfortable than voyagers, shame the 158s can only do 90mph though. The one reason i prefer AXC over VXC is simply the option to use an HST, i avoid voyagers like the plague due to the noise, lack of personal space and horrible seating. However obviously VXC had the advantage of serving hot food and also when they started the interiors were fresh and not worn like they are on AXC now. All their voyagers should be brought up to the standard of the HSTs with a proper refurbishment, if that is even possible!
