An article has appeared online which suggests Ryanair might consider starting flights from Martson Airport in Kent if it reopens again in future. Link to said article below for anyone interested.

Ben: did I dream it or did Aeroflop pull out of Gatwick on their Moscow route recently? Or does this make it the second Russia route from Gatwick? As ever, visa issue, sanctions and a devalued Rouble make outward tourism from Russia unlikely, so I suppose they are targeting diaspora or inward tourism?

What would the catchment for Manston be? From anywhere west of Maidstone/the Medway Towns you have a faster journey via the M20/M2 to Gatwick (or City). For the NW corner of Kent it's also a straightforward drive to Stansted. That leaves Ashford (maybe), Canterbury and the coastal towns which is a population of circa 800,000.

From the article they seem to be implying Ryanair would have a market because they have little presence at Gatwick and therefore 'sarf of da riva' is their catchment for the Manston flights, though it would be just a few flights.

No you didn't dream it mate. Aeroflot move the flight to Heathrow from next month, and then St. Petersburg starts straight after I believe. Been a while since we the latter route operating to/from Gatwick. See how long it lasts...

The same issues (bar currency) apply in the other direction too. There is doubtless potential for tourism to Russia but I suspect that as long as Putin and his ilk remain in power that Anglo-Russian relations will remain sufficiently frosty as to make meaningful tourism too difficult to sustain much by way of direct air links.

Are these back on again? It was reported locally that they would start 3x weekly mid morning flights from S18. It was then said the slots were moved to late evening, and then that these slots had also been cancelled.

I have pretty limited information, but I've seen that they have filed for slots. It's an early evening departure from Tel Aviv to Manchester with a Red Eye back to Tel Aviv. I've just seen reported on another forum that they appear as cancelled at the moment as they have pushed back departure to 1st July from original start date.

Ah, no, now it's reporting all El Al slots are cancelled. I'm sure easyJet are pleased as the sole direct service provider now. Whenever I've seen it arrive or depart Manchester it seems well loaded.

Seen elsewhere that Ethiopian had filed for slots at Gatwick, transit slots nonetheless. Perhaps they will split up their TATL operations from exclusively Dublin to a mixture of Dublin and Gatwick.
With Rwandair also flying out of Gatwick via Brussels to Entebbe perhaps this has also swayed their decision.

I just noticed that Jet2 have had two in as many days, 1 at Newcastle 1 at Manchester.

No worse than many other airports IMO. Rather depends on the time of day and time of year. Peak periods are a bit of a crush but Luton's not alone in that.
2 in 2 days is a lot. That said Malaysian lost 2 777's in a few months. Weird stuff happens which is way out of what would normally be expected.

I only ask as on Twitter a Jet2 flight did suffer a suspected tailstrike on departure this week from Newcastle but diverted and landed safely at Manchester.
I think there was only one tailstrike.

Speaking of Reykjavik, I have just returned from Iceland and was shocked at how busy the place has become since WOW Air became a big player. 10 or so flights from UK/mainland Europe would arrive, then 10 or so would depart to the US and Canada. Also had no idea they flew to places as far as Tel Aviv and San Francisco. Iceland is also a very beautiful, if expensive, place for a stopover. They had regular buses going to the Blue Lagoon from the airport for those on longer stopovers. All very interesting.

Oh you’ll enjoy. I was wondering if it would live up to the hype, but if you like landscapes you will definitely like it. Very unique. Even the super touristy things were good.

I can absolutely believe there was a suspected tail strike, and they diverted to Manchester to check, but I would have thought the actual tail strike would be on AVHerald.
We didn't find Iceland outrageous. Eating out was very pricey, as was booze. But we did meals at our remote cabin most nights and find it quite comparable to the Netherlands. Fresh fruit not grown there is very expensive, so we did mostly veg.
The house was very comparable to France at the time of year (<€1000 per 7 days for a 7 sleeper-house) and the rental car was normal price.
