Indeed BA001 is sadly missed.

I agree, Concorde was the epitome of air travel. You can still fly on BA001 if you really want to but it now flies from London City > Shannon > New York and is now a little A318. Still, not the same though is it... ?? :D

On a more local, to me anyway, level, Hong Kong is undergoing a change of BA metal with the A380 taking over from the B744 on BA25/26 already (Oct 22) and a B777 taking over from another B744 from this Sunday (27 Oct) so the old jumbo's have one less destination to fly to now. Wonder if they will up-gauge other routes or put them out to pasture....

As I understand it, the 747s will be slowly phased out from the fleet.

They will be. There are a couple more 777-300ERs to come replacing 744s - The A380s will phase out 12 744s, with A350-1000s taking out more from 2020. There may be 777X orders to come.

No chance of the B747-8i in the BA Fleet. (In fact I think the tiny Lufthansa fleet may be the only one bus)

On a "fag run" to Luxembourg today with BA..

Had a nice Bacon Croissant on the way over this morning from LHR.

Return journey this evening just a measly packet of crisps (smaller than EC First Class and that's saying something) and a drink. (1820 dep)

One interesting aspect of my journey the last leg from LHR to EDB was a 767-had a whole row to myself.

Lord knows why they had a 767 - a bit like putting an HST on from Falkirk to Glasgow :p

On the subject of 767s I understand G-BNWR is being taken out of service on 10/11/13 which marks the start of the 767 withdrawals from BA's fleet following the arrival of the 787s etc.

According to an article in the Telegraph, Ryanair are on something of a quest to improve their public image, introducing a number of things that are commonplace with other airlines and reducing some of the more extortionate charges. This is apparently after a fall in bookings which has lead to MOL telling shareholders that the airline must stop trying to "p*** people off".

The most significant change is the introduction of allocated seating, following Easyjet's decision to do the same thing - though Ryanair will be charging £5 vs £3 at EasyJet. Those who do not pay for a seat will simply be allocated one. I must say, I won't miss the mad rush at boarding time.

In summary, here are the main points from the article;

The move is the latest in a series of initiatives aimed at improving Ryanair’s public image, and comes despite Michael O’Leary, the airline’s chief executive, insisting on Twitter during a Q&A session last month that it had no plans to do so. He claimed such a policy might make the boarding process slower, potentially resulting in delays.

It also comes exactly a year after budget rival EasyJet moved to fully allocated seating – a decision which was praised by travellers. Under EasyJet's system, all passengers are allocated a seat number, while those wishing to choose their seats are able to do so for an extra £3. For an additional £12 passengers can reserve seats with extra legroom in the front and or exit rows, and for an extra £8 they can have a seat in the first few rows, meaning they can usually exit the aircraft more quickly.

Other changes announced by Ryanair in recent weeks include:

The introduction of a 24-hour post-booking “grace period”, so passengers can fix minor errors, such as spelling mistakes, free of charge.

On all flights that operate before 8am or after 9pm, public announcements are now restricted to essential safety messages and cabin lights dimmed “so that any customers who wish to snooze, can comfortably do so.”

From November 30, a “cleaner, simpler” homepage and a more “intuitive booking flow” to “help customers easily find the lowest fares” will be launched.

From December 1, passengers will be allowed on board with a second “small” carry-on bag, such as a “small ladies handbag or [a] small airport shopping bag”, and the airline's boarding pass re-issue fee will be cut from £70 to £15.

From January 5, the charge for checking in luggage at the airport will fall from £60 to £30 per bag.

A member service called “My Ryanair”, that allows customers to store their details with the airline, enabling quicker bookings, will be launched in late December, while mobile boarding passes will be introduced in February.

The shift towards better customer service follows a fall in bookings. In September Ryanair warned it would not meet its profit forecast, prompting Mr O'Leary to tell shareholders it should scrap its “macho” image and eliminate things that “unnecessarily p*** people off”.

On Monday it cut its profit forecast for the second time for the year to March to around €510m from €570m.

Full article is here.

I have to hope that my refusal to fly Ryanair for some time now played at least some part in that.

I know some people have defended all the charges and gotchas, but I wasn't wiling to play those games and it seems others weren't either.

This might just get me to reconsider in the future.

That seems very generous. Does any other airline offer that?

Ryanair have already increased their fares a lot and no doubt will get even more expensive. The days of super cheap promotional fares seem to be over. BA on the other hand now charge extra for carry on baggage on some routes. There appears to be convergence between the traditionally 'no frills' and 'full service' airlines.

Yes, BA and others have had to start introducing new charges - but, by and large, they're pretty open and transparent.

I never realised Ryanair had let its cost for reprinting a boarding card to rise to £70! While it seems like a huge cut, it's still rather excessive at £15.

I do wish we'd stop keeping up the pretence that flying is still as super cheap as it once was. Yes, ten years ago you really could fly for a quid when there was a promotion that covered the taxes too (in my case, 50p each way on Ryanair). And even when you did still need to pay the taxes, they weren't as high as they are now.

To try and do anything to keep the headline figure down, then add on loads of fees after, is wrong. All that matters is the total sum of money you end up paying, not the flight being just £5 (plus £200 on top for all the other fees and gotchas).

They do it, of course, because they know that many people are ignorant and can't see through it.

Flying will always get more expensive. Best people accept it.

I know BA state in their booking confirmation to check thoroughly and call them if any details are incorrect; I'd imagine a lot of airlines will happily make the change without there being a written procedure as long as you check ASAP (I have anecdotal evidence of both easyJet and Jet2 doing this).

Virgin Atlantic gave me a 24 hour option to cancel the booking I made recently.

The exact text is : You may cancel your booking without penalty within 24 hours of making your reservation al long as that reservation is made one week or more prior to a flight's scheduled departure. Please call the contact centre to cancel the booking.

No mention of changes, only cancellation. I guess if you make a mistake you must cancel the reservation and start again.

This will be my first flight with Virgin in about 5 years I think, it will be interesting to experience the in-flight service as the last time I flew with them, they really had dropped their service levels from what they once were.

If the plane has been refurbished, you'll be fine as the seats are nicer and there's a better in flight entertainment system.

As for the service, I've never had any problems - but they no longer give out the ice creams and the like, but things like Love Hearts.

This is of course for economy. I've not been premium economy, and my last Upper Class flight was 2008.

I'm flying from HKG - LHR on Thursday so I should find out which A346 it will be on Tuesday night as this is the outbound leg of my aircraft from LHR.
I am looking forward to it, as I do with all flights. At least it will be non-stop which is always a benefit rather than my more recent trips with Emirates which involve stopping at Dubai International Shopping Centre Airport. I do like Emirates and their A380s but Virgin was much cheaper this time and as it is non-stop was too good to pass up.

Looks like first Thames Estuary Airport designs are being unveiled. The press released for the Testrad proposal, 'London Britannia Airport,' can be downloaded here.

Still to be convinced of the need for a brand new hub to replace Heathrow, but the proposals will be interesting nevertheless.

And "free" if you read the article....:p

Cost £42.7 Billion (surely a better investment than HS2)

£47 Billion raised by flogging Heathrow and it's surrounding bits.

Seems like a no-brainer to me :p

I'm not sure. Heathrow seems to be getting its act together and becoming a quality airport, with construction of Terminal 2 and its satellite in the next ten years, by which time it will probably have permission to build the elusive third runway. I don't think any proposals for a Thames Gateway airport are justifiable, not to mention the detrimental impact on employment in West London if Heathrow's hub status was downgraded or even shifted elsewhere entirely.

The Boris island plans seem ludicrous. No private cars/taxis allowed, remote check-in/immigration at Ebbsfleet. So that will go down well with Premium passengers having to fight for space on buses/trains to the mainland when two or three A380s land in quick succession.

The Fosters and Partners plan for a Thames Hub at the Isle of Grain wasn't too bad - rail, road and air interchange, freight integration at London Gateway and Thameport, and high speed loop line diverging from Ashford and rejoining at Stratford.

“But my satnav said to go here!”

The ultimate wrong turning!

One of Boeing's four special 747 freighters has managed to land at the wrong airport and the runway is too short for it to take off again...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-25032380

A Boeing 747 Dreamlifter cargo plane may be stuck at a minor airport in Kansas for some time after it apparently landed there by mistake.

The giant cargo jet was heading for McConnell air force base in Wichita but instead touched down at nearby Colonel James Jabara airport.

Local media report that the jet may be too large to take off from Jabara's 1,860m (6,100ft) runway.

Now given that those aircraft are very intensively diagrammed ferrying bits of 787 around, having one of them unexpectedly unavailable for a while could have interesting consequences couldn't it?

I imagine the only way they can get it out of there other than extending that runway is to strip the interior right down ( difficult as, being a freighter it's already basically a shell ), put a minimum of fuel in and do a short hop to the other airport - pretty much what was done with brand new VC-10s hopping from Brooklands to Wisley.

That, in itself, could be interesting if there is a fuselage section on board...

Update:

The BBC page linked above has been updated; they're going to attempt a take off at 18.00GMT today; the boffins think it can just about make it...

I hope the local spotters are there I think it may be the american version of this vid - http://youtu.be/ThoZNxy2JZk

From what I can gather it had just been to Italy to pick up some horizontal stabilizers and was going into McDonnell to pick up a nose section.

I do seem to recall reading that someone once landed a 707 at Northolt thinking it was Heathrow and that's why the gas holder at Southall was painted with "LHR" on it in huge letters with a big arrow? It now only says "LH" though following a repaint a year or two ago.

Apparently they had to strip everything except the flight deck seats out of that 707 and then put in only enough fuel to get it the short hop to LHR in order to get it out of Northolt...!!

Presumably unload as much weight as possible and carry only a small amount of fuel.

Is anyone else dreading the moment when Mobile Phones are permitted to be used onboard flights - it can't be far away.

At the moment it is one of the last refuges of sanity

Apparently on Aer Lingus' long distance flights, WiFi is being installed and I believe you will also be able to make/receive calls too. So there goes your refuge of sanity

No doubt it'll cost a fortune to use mind!

It's already here.......

http://www.virgin-atlantic.com/gb/en/the-virgin-experience/in-flight-connectivity/mobile-phones.html

http://www.emirates.com/uk/english/flying/staying_connected/staying_connected.aspx

The last couple of times i've flown long haul it has been with these two airlines hence the links. I've never seen anyone use it however although one chap on Emirates did connect his laptop via the onboard wifi to work on emails etc and what looked like a presentation. Not that I was looking of course... :)

Long haul I think people look forward to a bit of rest so put their phones away anyway but it is possible to use them, at least on some carriers.

Today's Times suggests that the Airports Commission under Sir Howard Davis will recommend the expansion of Heathrow to the exclusion of any new hub airport such as Boris Island. The three favoured options all include extra runways at Heathrow.

The preferred route for the new western rail access to Heathrow is also to be announced in the next few weeks. It will probably join the Great Western Main line somewhere near Iver, with 4 trains per hour serving Slough and possibly stations to the west.

Are Flybe having a laugh ????

Had an e-mail thanking me for being a loyal customer and please open for an x-mas treat .

Wow I'm totally underwhelmed - a free seat reservation

Never mind you can get a seat for free by checking in at the airport or online, only mugs pay when travelling alone. Not even an exit seat - which incidentally you can normally get free at the airport rather than paying £15 in advance or whatever it is.

What an insult - do they think we are morons ?

Anyone else had one of these ?

I got an email from Heathrow Express offering buy one get one free on a HEX ticket, which was quite generous. Even though I can't use a railcard for a further discount, it was still enough to get me to book after having originally decided to use Heathrow Connect next time to save some money.

A free seat reservation with an airline is quite lame. In fact, so lame that it would have been better not offered at all and risk p**sing off customers.

It's not much better than the many people that seem to think that offering a 30-day trial on LoveFilm is some sort of special and exclusive members-only deal when you anyone can get it!
