A propos various recent posts I have recently been seeing a lot of Air New Zealand adverts offering very competitive fares via Singapore. Flights from the UK are with Star Alliance partner Singapore Airlines (both LHR and MAN) and prices include a stop-over in Singapore. The onward flight is by 787-9. If I was heading that way I would certainly be tempted.

If BA 787-9s are anything like Norwegian's lot, I wouldn't do it unless I was in Premium Economy or better. Do NOT do it in normal Economy seats!

BA's 789s are allegedly awful in economy. They're very nice if you sit in the big seats at the front though. ;)

I bet! I've only one 787-9 under my belt (EI-LNI) and I don't see that changing any time soon.

Norway is being investigated for 2017, although it will not be with Norwegian. I will go to Heathrow and fly with BA and their A319s if I have to, but Ryanair from Manchester is just so tempting...

I've recently been on a Ryanair 737-800 on the October Half Term to Faro from Man Airport. Lovely weather and all that. :)

I'm a little embarrassed to say this, but it's been a long while since I've stepped aboard an airline (the last one was BA) so I may be come across as 'that dirty amateur'. However...

The seats aren't really that bad, are they. Ok, so I'm not adult sized yet (guess later) but my legs seemed to fit fine, and the chairs were of average comfort (I don't mind most seats on transport). The lighting was all well and good in the night flight, but by golly, the colour choices must be one of the worst for aircraft I've ever seen. The combination of bright 'slap in your face' yellow and bold blue made it seem like a kids play area. Also, yellow plastic is really not that nice...

I've seen some pictures of how they would look like when they are refurbished and I'm super impressed. Can't wait for that as I'm probably gonna be flying more often soon. :)

Some nitpicks though. The safety announcer sounds a bit bored and forced. Actually, just listening to her drone on sucks the soul out of me, no offence. And the safety cards? Please please please don't eat me on the head for saying this but, y'know, I could draw better than that......

Still, decent for a first ride in a long time and the crew were really nice, which goes a long way! :)

Ha ha, don't worry that you sound like an amateur, you don't, compared to the trip reports on Airliners.net most of us are amateurs (Not comparing them to the railway trip reports on here by the way which are a good read with some damn good writers). Ha ha. God knows how a lot of them can afford so many trips in business and first class, I am guessing they are business trips. They are a good read though to see how the other half live. Ha ha.

Ryanair interiors are hideous, Michael O'Leary must have got a job lot of cheap yellow and blue plastic (I guess they are the colours of the airline, possibly better than white plastic everywhere, maybe not). The safety announcements and cards just have to tell you what you need to know. I guess the airline would have to pay a lot more for crew who sound like they went to stage school and artists to produce a better safety card. Ha ha.

I use them because they get me where I want to go at the right price. That said I am using them to fly to Warsaw Modlin next weekend and would rather have flown Wizzair to Warsaw Chopin. I didn't book mind you. Ha ha. I think the saving on the flights is going to be countered by the cost of getting in to Warsaw as compared to from Chopin.

Ryanair are useful, I would rather go to Liverpool city centre in a Lamborghini but Arriva, Stagecoach and Northern are cheaper and they do the job. :D

I think they just use a standard one from within the fleet; whichever is available on the given date.

Of course as we're booked flight only we're not having to sit through the course bit which gives us more time available on the day - the downside to that is I'll have to explain all the noises and sensations during the flight to my daughter myself!

Well, we did the flight today and I am pleased to report that my daughter officially likes airliner travel. :D

Ah great stuff mate, am made up. I think it helps some people when someone can explain what all the weird noises and sensations are. When the flaps are deployed on A320's it sounds a bit to me like someone cleaning a window. Ha ha. There are loads of mad sensations as a plane slows down aren't there, all totally normal.

Yes, that is true. And rather surprisingly given that this was my 46th flight and my 21st type of aircraft, it was my first time in any of the Airbus range...

21 types and your first Airbus! What else have you been on? There must be some good stuff on the list. Most of my flights have been 737 and A320 types. If you have the time a few highlights would be interesting. In fact apart from A320's and 737's all I have been on is 2 747-400's, an A340-300, 3 757-200's and a 777-200. Been on most of the variants of 737 and A320 mind. Oh, and I've had a flight on a Norman Trislander! Quite a hard one to get. Ha ha.

Highlights? OK...

My first flight was on a BAe 1-11, G-BGKE.

I have a DC-3 on the list, G-AMRA.

G-BOAF appears twice and G-BOAG once... :D

One BAe ATP is there, G-MANU.

My longest flight is 8h32 in a 767, I-DEIL, from Fiumicino to Kennedy.

There are two appearances of G-FLII on the list; the second ( 31/08/2001 ) as a result of the first ( 01/04/1999 ) being curtailed by an emergency landing back at Elstree after just 45 minutes following the other passenger being violently sick all over Capital's portable radio set - a few inches higher and she would have caught Caroline Feraday on the back of the neck...

I have had the controls of G-BHJW ( Ce152 ), G-BXTB ( Ce152 ) and G-DOME ( PA28 ).

On 11/08/1999 I hired Jacqueline Gold's Be200, G-REBK, for a 2h25 flight from Biggin Hill to view the total eclipse over Cornwall, having realised a year in advance that it would almost certainly rain on the day... it did!

FWIW, as someone who travels to Oslo semi-regularly, I have no problem with Norwegian (and I'm 5'10" or so) for that distance (wouldn't want to go much further, though!), and frequently choose their direct flights from EDI–OSL in preference to going from GLA–LHR–OSL or GLA–AMS–OSL. I'd definitely choose them in preference to Ryanair!

When it comes to 789s, it sounds like they have the same seats as BA's A380s, which I at least found fine (well, as far as economy seats on a long-haul flight are!), so I may well just end up doing that. Apparently half an inch wider than Aer Lingus's A330's!

787-9 apparently better than 787-8, but the bar was set pretty low.

The new Ryanair seats are fine. The interior is still a headache. They are not the end of the world though. For getting to Oslo look carefully at the price of the airport shuttle from TRF, you may end up better off booking a marginally more expensive DY flight or SAS flight from MAN to OSL. Might be. I'm sure the other commenter who travels there regularly will tell you whether it's worth it or not.

Wow good stuff. 3 Concorde flights for starters. Ha ha. You win before I even read the rest, ha ha, I just saw the Concorde flights straight away. My longest flight was an LAN A340-300 from Auckland to Santiago, Christmas Eve 2011. My longest flight was 13 hours. (I have the reg noted somewhere around here). We took off about 5 hours after we landed thanks to the international date line. Lots of fun. Kids think Christmas Eve lasts too long, that one lasted nearly 2 days for me. Ha ha.

Nine across in a 787-800 is grim - similar to ten across in a 777, maybe even worse. I was pretty disappointed by the 787. It's noisy and cramped, although the electronic window shades which make the windows translucent rather than completely black are cool. Haven't tried a 900 yet.

The 789 is longer not wider than a 788. Unless the airline is feeling more generous I doubt it is better. I've heard some bad reviews of the Dreamliner. Bigger windows and better air pressure mean naff all if you are crammed in like a budget 737 or A320 on long haul. If you want 8 across on a 787 you are going to pay for it.

I found the air quality a huge bonus in the 787. The seating was horrendous and Qatar's IFE box underneath just adds to the misery. I had heard that the 787-9 was somehow different with regard to the seating. Maybe there's a wire crossed in there somewhere. A 9 across 777, living the Y travel dream...

Kudos on nabbing concorde.

I'm not sure mate, I heard the IFE box was totally down to buyer specification (I may be wrong). As such if you get the 787-9 you could have the same problem. I would have thought the problem would persist as the 9 is just a longer 8. The seating is mainly down to what the buyer specified as well, if not it wouldn't make a difference which airlines A320 you flew on for example. Many apologies if I am wrong. I wouldn't call a 9 across 777 a dream to be honest. An 8 across A340 was quite nice, probably the most space I felt I have ever had, at least in the 2 outer economy seats.

Many congratulations on your daughter discovering the joys of air travel! Shame she had to endure an Airbus though, and I find it mind-boggling that you'd not had an Airbus craft before! It had to happen eventually, I have too many Airbus craft in my AFQR for my liking. They're slowly catching up with how many 737-800s I've had, and this is far from acceptable! For what it's worth, this is my list of preferences in order:

737-800
Dash 8
E175
E195 (OK, these two swap places every time I have one of them!)
787-9
Anything Airbus

That's a fair and balanced view of Ryanair, and please do share more of your experiences in the air when you get another chance. Quite, I would say this applies to everyone, maybe even generate some trip report threads so the rest of the community here gets a chance to see them?

I like the blue and yellow, always have done. I have yet to properly look at the refurbished examples, but I'm not in a rush to do so. The Ryanair crews take some beating in my experience, I have had worse from the supposedly superior airlines. Depending which crew you get on Flybe, Ryanair can beat even some of them!

Quite, I can't wait to fly Ryanair again!

Unfortunately, thanks to my less than pleasant experience with Norwegian back in March 2016 (I discussed it on this thread at the time, and I posted my long complaint in a review on TripAdvisor), I treat them as the enemy and will avoid them at all costs. So does my mate I went to the USA with. I re-read my review yesterday, and the comment I made that sticks in my head the most is how even Ryanair pre-seat allocations would have shaken their heads at Norwegian's operations. I don't remember if I posted the full complaint I sent to Norwegian, who very much brushed it off weeks later with not even an apology or anything, to this thread but if anyone needs it I will post it later.

Ryanair is my favourite airline, so I will choose to fly with them very happily. Yes Norwegian fly 737-800s but I will not endure their useless crews or service again!

BA Review

OK, last post from me for now on this thread gang, my long-awaited review of BA. I've already hinted to bits of it in Day 1 of my Tech's In Vienna trip report in my usual thread, but here goes for the full low-down:

This trip had been highly anticipated for 6 months since it was booked in early May 2016, my first time on British Airways (BA) and I had heard various things, good and bad, about BA. However I knew I was in for a better time than on Norwegian, and flying with a premium airline meant I expected nothing but excellence. Let's start with bag drop at Gatwick Airport, North Terminal. Please note from January 2017 it's all change on BA, amongst other things they're moving to South Terminal at Gatwick Airport. We'll come to the other big change soon enough:

Bag drop was nice and easy, with virtually no queue on our visit, although I'd imagine in peak holiday season this is a very different experience! Even with some systems issues, the BA staff were friendly and I unfortunately forgot to note the name of the man who manned our desk as he was very good at his job. We're through here in just a few minutes, and security was also a breeze (again, a very different experience in the summer holidays I would imagine!) and the staff very friendly and helpful. Compared to Stansted Airport, and for that matter Birmingham Airport, this was a welcome change!

Eventually we get informed the gate is number 574, and the staff here have no problem getting us marked off on their lists and we're boarding in no time. Our seats were allocated to 9A and 9B, a window and middle seat respectively. I'm a Boeing fan by nature, so getting on an Airbus plane made me feel like a traitor, and this was an Airbus A319. Give me a Boeing 737-800 any day! This was especially noted with the legroom on these planes, it was virtually non-existant. My fellow traveller had it worse, as he has longer legs than me! This was made even worse when the woman in front of him went to full recline on her seat, which she thankfully decreased the recline of which after being ordered by flight crew when she didn't want to do it after our own request. Even so he had a bad experience, so I tried to book exit row seats which had superior legroom for the return journey, however this was only possible for one of us so I couldn't do it.

So, the world famous in-flight service of complimentary drinks and refreshments that BA offer. Until 11th January 2017, it is formed of free soft and hot drinks (not that the hot drinks are actually advertised!) as well as some alcoholic drinks. I went for one of them on the homeward flight (BA2659) a few days later, but they had no Amstel and we were the first row to be served on that flight so I was disappointed. The refreshments were only packets of sea salted crisps on BA2658 on 14th November 2016, which were nice but I would have preferred more variety. Apparently the only other choice of snacks was a packet of lemon biscuits which they eventually found some of apparently. I settle for a coffee, and wow my cup was just about only half full, what happened here?! That and it was utterly rancid stuff, only just about drinkable but I've had bargain basement supermarket coffee that tastes better! It barely quenched any thirst whatsoever, and I felt like we were lucky to get anything, as if they didn't want to give anything to anyone but had to.

The service was hardly any better on the way back, with the same rancid coffee and the crisps were decent enough and actually much needed at that point. The same uncomfortable seats, the same rubbish legroom and by the time we alighted the plane it was more than welcome to get the legs moving again! Worth pointing out bag drop and security at Vienna Airport were nice and easy, once you understood what the signs were telling you.

Overall, I didn't think anything overly special of BA, and as I've mentioned to other people since BA2658 I prefer Ryanair which is unusual and eyebrow-raising to almost everyone. I'd rather pay less for my flight and pay money for a decent size and drinkable coffee, not to mention take my own choice of food and drink from the airport post-security with me on the plane. Ryanair crews are much more attentive and happier to answer questions than BA crew, which I also found surprising to be fair. Still, it has to be said that I would definitely fly BA again over Norwegian! Mind you, I'd also fly Manx2 (who I think are now called CityWing or something silly like that) over Norwegian. Aer Lingus who also use Airbus planes take priority over Norwegian, as do Flybe with their excellent planes, I could go on!

From 11th January 2017, except from London City Airport for some reason, complimentary refreshments will be a thing of the past on BA. Marks and Spencer are being teamed up with for food on BA, and to be honest the complimentary refreshments are a waste of time having so let's have the new era on BA now, let's not wait until January!

Travel Tip: For your own sake, pay the extra to reserve your choice of seat! Don't leave it until the last minute either!

Many congratulations on your daughter discovering the joys of air travel! Shame she had to endure an Airbus though, and I find it mind-boggling that you'd not had an Airbus craft before!

I had a feeling she would like it despite all her nerves in the weeks leading up to it, and I was right. She told me she liked the take off best, and that didn't surprise me either.

About Airbuses, I haven't actively been avoiding them - it just happened that way although I do prefer to fly on things that have a traditional yoke for the flight crew rather than a microstick at the side. I'll re-post my full flights log at some point, but I'll have to re-create it first... I'm running off a printed copy with the last couple of flights handwritten in...

The leg room was quite generous ( we were in row 17 so pretty much in the middle of the back half ) so I'm not sure why you use the word "endure" unless it's a reference to the seats being plasticy rather than fabric? The leg room was certainly much greater than in a Pendolino...

Kudos on nabbing concorde.

It was a bit galling getting a dud on the third flight though...!!

I'm a Boeing fan, so I will naturally be less than pleased with Airbus craft, hence the term 'endure'.

I'm sorry, but I had to embolden the text in the quote above for a reason. I don't know which 390s you've been on, but the legroom has always been superior on a 390 to that on an Airbus craft for me. I would happily spend 8 hours on a 390 over 8 hours on an Airbus craft!

When I'm on a 390 I tend to pick one of the very few forward facing airline seats with a full window. On those, my legs are almost touching the back of the seat in front.

On G-DBCB yesterday evening, there was a space of almost six inches between my knees and the seat in front. It's not a dedicated "experience aircraft; prior to our flight yesterday it did a round trip to Amsterdam and after ours it went up to Edinburgh, returning this morning.

I think your expectations of a normal short-haul BA Flight were a little high. In beggar class they have only been doing "Peanuts and Drinks" for ages - apart from "Breakfast Flights" where you still get a Hot Meal.

It's almost as though they have been reducing the free service so much that people will be pleased to pay for anything which is better than nothing for free!!

The one exception to this is Alcohol which remained top notch and free. You probably were unaware that it is unlimited, if you want another one you just have to press the "call button"

The "baby airbus" was unfortunate. As I mentioned before I normally check in at the Airport and get an exit seat for free. I don't need to drop a suitcase off as I'm only going for a short period of time and you can take 2 bags onboard.

The democratisation of UK Air Travel has undoubtedly reduced the standards and overall experience. Personally I would rather pay a bit more for "All-In" and the competition be based on the price anyone can offer that for.

The net result is you are now paying more for a no frills flight than you used to for an all inclusive one in many cases.

"Peanuts and drink" would have been fine, but there were no peanuts!

I was of the impression you were lucky to get one drink to be honest, so it wasn't worth pressing the call button. My expectations were of a better in flight experience than on LCCs and I didn't get that.

What I did like was the sticker above the door opposite the one you board, which tells you the craft type but more importantly the registration of the craft. I managed to get it from the gate, but it was still handy to have.

I'm still not rushing to try BA again, but I am to fly with Ryanair and Flybe, my two favourite airlines.

As for the legroom Peter Mugridge refers to on a 390, I don't really mind which seat I'm at but I prefer to book a table seat next to the window so I can have a power socket. I have not found these seats with such tiny legroom you refer to, although I'm only 5'10" so I guess that makes the big difference!

Ryanair used to fly to both TRF and RYG; RYG closed by Ryanair (who were by far the largest airline there) pulled out as a result of changes in Norwegian tax law, and TRF is about two hours away from Oslo by coach or (hourly!) train. OSL, by comparison, is 20 minutes away by a nice, comfortable train with plenty of luggage space. So, yeah, OSL is way more practical.

When it comes to Ryanair: I think it's the interior that always puts me off, combined with what always seems like more insistent advertising than easyJet or Norwegian and their habit of threatening to push everything to be paid for and being horrible to airports.

Isn't there some sort of significant airport premium for trains to/from Gardermoen (my apologies if I spelt that badly!) airport though? I'm working on very rough memory here so I might be completely wrong. Ah wait, I might be thinking of Stockholm here

For me, going solo it's very expensive to get to/from Gatwick. Heathrow is no better. Manchester and Liverpool aren't cheap unless on bargain Advances, but that's a risk for the homeward journey. However, I can fly MAN-TRF for £44 return. There would be a need for hotels before and after the flights though, but I would simply bolt on a bash in Manchester to make it worthwhile.

Of course. The box is at buyer's discretion, as is the seating. I really have no figures on the subject, only second hand reports. I'm not going to talk about it more until I have my own experience or actual data. But anecdotal evidence suggests what I said before.

No, the 777 comment was sarcastic. It was said to emphasise how far we've come where, for me, just this one step back is a big benefit to the overall feel. Just too many hours spent down the back of a long or mid haul flight. Sorry it didn't come across so well.

There are thousands of better offers than a 9 across 777, but here is where the world is! And alas the A340 won't be around much longer.

Tech: your expectations of BA were way, way, way too high. I also feel a lot of people on here told you that long before you stepped on board...

This thread has discussed many of the benefits of flying BA, many of which are being eroded. These include: schedule, frequency of service, range of destinations on the long-haul end, (no longer) baggage, IRROPS performance, majority use of hub or 'proper' airports.

They never included service. The food and drink... it's been done to death.

I am much the same, I always prefer easyJet or Norwegian over Ryanair even though I fly with the latter regularly. Norwegian's 737s definitely offer the best LCC product in Europe with mood lighting, decent legroom, free Wi-Fi and video entertainment. I'll usually pay a premium of up to around £20 per segment not to fly Ryanair, although I'm doing more to avoid them now that they have reduced their compulsory online check-in window to 4 days prior. In comparison, easyJet or Norwegian allow free airport check-in so it's not even an issue.

easyJet don't officially offer free airport check-in - they don't officially offer airport check-in at all - you MUST use online or app. However they do seem to apply discretion to this on occasions.

As for Airbuses, the seats are wider on BA A319/20 series than B73x as the fuselage is wider. That's reason alone to prefer Airbus. (easyJet specified a wider aisle instead, which is also a benefit).

They don't encourage it, but it's nice to know that the option is there if you really need it - plus they allow check-in 30 (or 60?) days in advance so I don't need it anyway. Ryanair is just four days now, which is tricky if you don't have access to a printer while you're away or don't have data on your smartphone etc - and of course you'll be charged a fortune if you don't do it.

180 NOK each way—it ain't cheap, but when compared with travel around Oslo for 32 NOK by journey it doesn't seem so bad!
