I've done A340s a few times. They are about the same size, - just four-engined for non-ETOPS sectors.

they're not "about" the same size, as far as width goes- they're exactly the same fuselage barrel cross section, indeed the same as the A300 and A310. The A340 and A330 have almost identical wings as well- essentially all the A330 is missing is the second pair of engines. If you're looking for differences, it's that the A340 came in in longer variants. Oh, and you can still buy an A330, the A340 is out of production. The A330 design is being updated a little with new engine options (A330NEO).

Older A330s even have mount points for the outer engines (RAF aircraft use them for refueling pods) and a central main gear well with the doors sealed shut (A340s have an extra main gear bogie). Airbus deliberately made as many parts as possible common between the two. I believe new A330s built after the A340 went out of production have had these deleted to save weight.Fuselage is identical to the A300 but has been stretched a few times (especially in the case of the A346)

Just wanted to post that I was very impressed on my outbound journey with Virgin. The upper deck on the 747-400 was a great place to sit, and the crew couldn't do enough for everyone - the service never really stopped, which was fantastic. The food wasn't bad either.

Just a shame that the crew on the return flight were so indifferent - I think it had a lot to do with the Cabin Service Director who was something of a dragon based on her dealings with passengers and the crew. Such a shame, as a few of the crew seemed lovely - but not motivated. Should have been a great flight with only about 150 people on a 747-400.

Flybe is returning to 'Bournemouth' Airport from next year.

Whatever next, public transport which runs late at night?

Thanks Kite159 - quite an interesting move, and even more interesting choice of routes. I assume the flights to Deauville (Normandy) Toulon and Biarritz will be seasonal? I can't see them supporting year round traffic - only Biarritz has year round service to the UK to Stansted with Ryanair.

Flybe has announced it is to open a base at Bournemouth Airport in 2015.

The low-cost airline, which pulled out of the terminal in 2010, says it will resume flights there at the end of March, initially flying to Glasgow.

Flights to Amsterdam, Manchester, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Jersey, Dublin, Deauville (Normandy) Toulon and Biarritz will begin in May.

Bournemouth Airport said it would potentially bring an extra 300,000 passengers and up to 50 new jobs.

Wonder if they have a tour operator contract. Bath Travel are pretty big around that area and used to operate their own 737 from Bournemouth. Suspect Bath are buying so many seats per France flight in bulk with the rest of the plane left to Flybe

That would be logical - I can't see the routes supporting traffic without some kind of backing. I did wonder about their codeshare with Air France, but it seems unlikely to the regional airports involved.

Flybe are also reopening a base at Aberdeen with 4 Aircraft - another one that was shut last year.

Bath Travel are not the "Bath Travel" of old.

The Bath family sold the business to Hays Travel October 2013.

They have a sizeable branch network in Dorset and Hampshire but not quite as dense as previously.

I wonder if they are prepared to take the risk on taking an allocation on these flights?

Anyone got any good tips for flights from Northern England to Panama? Cheapest I've seen are from Manchester with Delta.

That sounds decidedly dodgy....

Are you turning into a mule ? :p

Ha ha. No mate. I've done loads of travelling but one of the lads has never left Europe and wants to go somewhere a bit mad. He watched a documentary about the ship canal and wants to see it. I've told him it is a bit ropy there but I'll look in to it.

I'm actually trying to get him to go to Buenos Aires instead but I fancy somewhere different so am indulging his interest.

Is it just me, or is London City Airport a bit cramped in the departure area ?

No, you are not alone in thinking that; it is far too cramped, and it even looks rather dated.

The departures security line is very cramped, and does not work very well in the morning peak. Departures is excessively cluttered and it could do with having some of the counters removed. I'm not aware of plans to expand the terminal, but the owners are looking to significantly increase the number of flights so it could get worse before it improves.

Can anyone tell me what G-EZDZ is doing circling Newquay airport at about 2000ft? It's done multiple passes and is apparently flying gatwick - Doncaster ".

New pilots doing their required landings to get their A320 type rating. They take off from Gatwick fully fueled, fly somewhere quiet like Newquay and spend the day circuit bashing (Touch and Gos). There will prob be 20 or so pilots on board who have done all of their A320 systems training in a simulator, but they have to do 2 landings in the real Aircraft to get their rating to fly the type in service. Left seat will be an instructor and the newbies take turns to be in the right seat.

Thanks for the answer, I did suspect it could be training of some sort. Thanks once again!

What's wrong with the Ship Canal down the road? ;)

Ha ha, I did suggest Irlam to him if he wanted to go somewhere a bit mad with a ship canal. I used to spend a lot of time walking dogs around Woolston so I fancied somewhere a bit different. Plus if you have a scouse accent the pubs of Irlam can be quite lively. Ahem. :D

We've had one over Liverpool quite a lot recently but I can't remember the reg. Just flying circuits out over Halewood, over the roof of my house near West Allerton then turning over the river. All at about 2000m. It made it in to the Liverpool Echo because some clowns thought it was terrorists. We also had one of Virgins brand new 787-900's flying out recently but it was just flying up to Scotland and back, Edinburgh I think.

I'd like to take this opportunity to praise up Stockholm Vasteras Airport, it's only a small place but it's run well and was the least stressful airport I've been to since I flew back from the Isle of Man!

Butts (the forum member here) would be happy with it too, it has one of those really funky smoking shelters indoors on the top level post-security. It's one of those clever extraction systems inside a bus stop-style shelter, and it works beautifully!

Links with Vasteras itself are very good, 10 minute frequency during the day on bus route 3 and only SEK25 (£2.50) one way. I think there's a day pass on the buses too, but didn't need it so didn't research it. The buses are comfortable too for the 15 minute trip to/from the city centre, and the bus station is right next to Vasteras Central station, so it's an airport with very good links at reasonable prices to elsewhere.

The Flygbussarna coaches to Stockholm Cityterminalen (only across the road from Stockholm Central railway station) do indeed wait for passengers to get off the plane and buy tickets too, which I didn't think would actually happen. A single was SEK159 (£15.90) which for a 100km journey isn't too bad. Modern coaches with WiFi, but my phone wouldn't accept the WiFi for some reason.

As for the Ryanair flights we did to/from there, 23 minutes late push-back from Stansted (gate 87, for anyone curious, and my first time on this side of STN, always been gates 40-59 for me normally) on FR682 and 11 minutes late stopping at the terminal. 828 mile journey according to Flightdiary, not bad at all. Did FR682 - 1050 London Stansted to Stockholm Vasteras - on 14th November 2014, FR683 - 1430 Stockholm Vasteras to London Stansted - was done on 17th November 2014.

Outward flight was EI-DCZ, return flight was EI-DCY. Both winners which takes me to either 12 or 13 Ryanair B738s scored so far. Out of about 300 that's awful

Got the bug again though and hoping to fly somewhere in February when I have some time off :D

Usually an A319, sometimes A320 - you can tell what's booked for the flight by trying to select a seat when booking. 26 rows and 2 toilets = A319 and 31 rows and 3 toilets = A320 - also the early BRS-GLA usually is a remote stand so you'll get a mini tour of the airport on a Cobus.

The seats are pretty tightly packed but it's fine for the sub 1 hr flight. Wouldn't want to go to Egypt on one though!
