In retrospect, would it have been better if the 801/803/807s had instead been ordered as 125mph Aventras, with an intercity interior? Also what if the diesel Hitachis were instead the never actually produced bi-mode Aventras?

The door layout may need changing, however, how much better/worse would these be as intercity trains? I suspect that Aventras would've been far cheaper, so longer, higher capacity trains would've been ordered DaFT would save some pennies.

There was actually a dedicated 125mph bi-mode Aventra offered, but nobody purchased it.

Here are some pictures of the exterior and interior design of both first class and second class.

I've noted of late that we seem to have arrived at a time when the Bombardier inter-city product might be preferred over the alternatives.

Truly, the worm has turned compared to the situation of the past twenty years.

The Aventra hadn’t even started development when the tender for IEP was offered, so couldn’t have been an option. Bombardier suggested a joint venture with Siemens as they didn’t have anything suitable.
Would Alstom have been able to produce an intercity variant at the same time as the existing variants? Which have hardly had a faultless introduction themselves.

In what way would they have been better? Aventras have all had issues and have the worst reliability of all.
For an intercity platform the Hitachi A series is much better
