Avast computer antivirus question

Hi. Does any one have AVAST ANTIVIRUS ON their computer. I have had it for ages and upto no it us been fine, but when I tried to run it yesterday and today it says there is a problem, it has crashed, try to reload or reboot. I have done all that but the same messages keep coming up. Has anyone else had the same issues? I do also have the Malware anti virus which I am told works in a different way and, touch wood, that seems ok.

You shouldn't run two different lots anti-virus software. They will clash with each other; that may be the cause of your problem.

Would it be safe to say, ditch the Avast?

Uninstall all additional antivirus software. The built in Windows Defender is good enough (and free).

If things start clogging up then download and run CCleaner from Piriform to have a clean out

The choice of AV software is contentious and for every recommendation another person will counter claim and say theirs is better... Having been in IT for some time my comment is that you get what you pay for, and nothing is free. I would personally recommend looking at using a paid for subscription service, ESET offer a range of products, one of which is around £40 for three PCs and it includes protecting you against websites that may have some dodgy scripts running. But there are other paid services and they all do much the same thing.

In my last role as a IT technician we had a single machine that was off the main network as it was used but the servicing department to store competitors manuals and technical docs, most of which came in via engineers on memory sticks. It was originally built using Avast and I would be cleaning viruses of the machine on a regular monthly basis. Installed NOD32 which was ESETS basic AV package and never had an issue there after...
