Sorry to be that party pooper, but where refreshments are being given-out – notably alcohol – I don’t think the fare, with or without railcard, should be less than the retail price of the goods concerned. In fact, it should be substantially more – you’re getting first class travel, as well.
I might as well make myself really unpopular and state my view that where there’s a catering offer including lounge access, a £25 floor should apply to first class fares, net of any railcard discount.
The railway is supported by the taxpayer, and the optics are important – I don’t mean the ones spirits are drawn from.
If the argument is there are loads of empty first-class seats to be filled at any price, then it sounds as though there is too much first-class provision.
Do me a favour !! , more often than not the first class service does not reflect the first class price anymore especially on Avanti
Food and drinks are no longer complimentary as there is standard premium ( first class without food and drink ) and then first class at a higher price
I don’t begrudge the OP bagging a bargain like he /she did , let’s face it more often than not first class service is a let down and passengers are ripped off
When you say the value of goods given shouldn’t exceed the fare paid or along those lines . What about the majority who pay £100 plus and get goods that don’t come close to the price of the ticket ? Should the railway compensate them ? It works both ways but fortunately the kind of bargain that the OP received is rare very rare
I pay for a first class return Preston - Glasgow I don’t think I get my moneys worth from the first class hosts but it is what it is. The price of my ticket has shot up by 50% in the last 12 month's
Nice to know there are generous hosts around , the passenger didn’t ask for what they received they were offered it this time they got a great bargain next time they do the same journey they might not get offered anything , swings and roundabouts
