Where will the Avanti 221s go once they've been replaced?
Not yet confirmed. Most likely contender is thought to be XC, but this is far from definite.

Any discussion of this, however, belongs in speculative ideas and not in this thread.

Looks like another 390 has been released from refurbishment. Can anyone confirm please?

390148 was sat alongside the shed earlier this afternoon, possibly that?

What a stroke of luck! I'm booked on the 10:47 from Liverpool. Thanks for the information, let's hope it's true!
Should be yeah cause it's going empty to Wembley when it gets to Euston rather than forming the 14.30 to Glasgow like it normally did.

I thought they would be a press launch service beforehand and some sort of ad campaign saying that some new refurbed Pendo's are entering service.
I'd shout about it if I was a TOC on the WCML.
They might wait for more to be done to increase peoples chances of actually being able to use it. Suspect they’ll do a press release as a bare minimum next week though.

Though not sure it’s good enough to shout about. The colour scheme alone is so bland I’m half expecting to have HMRC audit me each journey.

Hopefully a significant upgrade on the wifi will finally happen. I've even found a northern 156 has better wifi than Avanti which for an intercity operator is plain embarrassing.

What is going happen with the 220/221s
They (Avanti's 5-car 221s) will be up for grabs with the leasing company.
Any new TOC will have to have DfT approval for the spend.
The trains (along with XC's Voyagers) are maintained at Central Rivers, Burton on Trent, which limits the options somewhat.
The most obvious first use is to replace the HSTs at XC.
EMR's class 222s will probably be coming off-lease at about the same time, which complicates things.

Grand central should snap them up and bring back the Euston-Blackpool services

There’s all ready Euston -Blackpool
Services on weekdays anyway.
Only temporary it’s only used to keep the train from blocking the platform at Preston. Pre Covid it was just the 4 a day but the last service was at 3pm to Euston. Grand central was going to serve kirkham and poulton and they was going to do a service Saturdays and Sundays something Avanti don’t do

Is it likely that the refurb Pendos will be allocated to particular routes first, or will you have an equal chance of catching one from, say, Glasgow/Manchester/Liverpool?

It seems a shame to run diesel trains on a fully electrified route
Diesel electric trains which can run at 125 meaning the pathing can be easy to put in and will speed journeys up. Even better it was going to give Nuneaton, Kirkham and poulton a direct service and all stations can fit a 5 car voyager

No more diesel under the wires, please. If an OAO wants to do this, order 80x.

Nuneaton has an hourly direct service to London at excellent prices with LNR, plus the odd Avanti and I think more from December. Kirkham and Poulton no more need direct services to London than any other smallish commuter station, e.g. those on Merseyrail or the Manchester suburbans. Blackpool does not justify direct London services; it's an easy change twice an hour at Preston plus three times an hour at Manchester if you prefer, all on modern electric rolling stock (i.e. 331s) with plenty of capacity.

I believe Blackpool is an anomaly in that it actually benefitted from the covid timetable in a certain aspect (eg more services to London though slower via Birmingham, at the expense of Glasgow.) I really hope they return to normal and originate from Glasgow again.

As do I. Blackpool in this case is just a convenient reversal point to avoid the trains needing to block platforms at Preston for long periods, a bit like Manchester Airport but less useful. There is no real justification for the through service. It needs a decent service to the places which provide it with most visitors - the likes of Liverpool and Manchester, primarily, though I believe it's bizarrely also popular with Scots!

Back to the refurbished Pendolino, are the above diagrams every day (M-F only?) or is it moving round a bit?

Would be particularly interested in where it might be this coming Bank Holiday Monday, if it'll be out, as I might be able to work a ride into my existing plans.
