Hi there

I have advance tickets travelling Manchester Picadilly to Euston for this Saturday, however looking at the history for the return leg, many evening trains were cancelled

What would/should I do? Would I be ok to just go on the next service (assuming that wasnt cancelled too!)

If your train is cancelled on an Advance you can generally travel on the train before or the train after (that actually operates) of the same TOC absent other specific instructions.

If you travel on the train after don't forget to claim Delay Repay.

You can travel on normally the one before or after but sometimes any alternative service is allowed, particularly if there are lots of cancellations.

If you get a later train, remember to claim Delay Repay for the later end to your journey than you planned for, if it exceeds the delay threshold.

Ah thats useful, thank you - if I can see that its cancelled and the earlier one is going I would just get myself back that way

Be prepared for the possibility of quite a lengthy wait. There have been occasions recently of a 2+ hour gap in service with the first one after being too full for people to board.

Yeah I was thinking about that too

To be honest on balance I would get a refund now on the tickets but that isnt possible anyway

Are they Advances? Book with Confidence still applies, if refund to a voucher is OK.

For walk-ups it'd cost you a tenner. Obviously if your train is actually cancelled a full refund is due if you don't travel.

Yeah advances, I can onlty change the dates/times by the looks of it

You need to go via customer services if your retailer won't automatically refund to a voucher. Who is it? People here might know their process.

If you do, use the term "Book with Confidence scheme". It's presently in place until September (for now).

Different retailers have their unique procedures, for Avanti we need to fill out this online form manually as instructed by this page.

You can obtain a refund now if your train's cancelled. Most traincrew-related cancellations (which has been most of them recently) begin showing on JourneyCheck the evening before.
