Hi

Can someone help me understand what is going on with Avanti’s timetables.

I am trying to travel to Scotland but being told they are not selling tickets yet they are selling tickets but saying their timetables aren’t confirmed.

If I book a train is there a possibility it won’t go ahead

Avanti is exceptionally unreliable at the moment due to a dispute between ASLEF and Avanti leading to the introduction of an emergency timetable (which is still too optimistic as cancellations still happen!)

I would advise against using them at all at the current time. If there’s another way to get there (LNWR, Northern and TPE via Manchester or LNER up to Edinburgh?)

Thanks seems like the cheapest ticket is 258 pounds to travel via Edinburgh so that is a non starter as flights are half the price of this

I have a sick relative so I assume the best way will be to fly

Is this dispute going on for the foreseeable ?

What exactly is the journey, i.e. from, to, date and time? We can see if we can do better.

Yes, the dispute (which it officially isn't) will be ongoing for potentially months yet and in that time Avanti is best avoided for anything even remotely time critical, and going to Manchester or Birmingham with them avoided entirely as with a third of the service running it is often severely overcrowded. (Less so for Liverpool and Scotland as they haven't suffered much of a reduction).

Thanks for the information

London to Glasgow on Sunday from 12pm onwards

The non Avanti route is 238 pounds so wouldn’t bother with that. If you do have any ideas would be great to hear them

Is 1400 the only time you can depart, or are you flexible as to time? Trainsplit gives some very reasonable fares from Kings Cross in the morning, e.g. £64.40 on LNER's 0900.

To get these do an advanced search excluding Avanti West Coast.

That expensive one will be because all Standard seats are reserved so it'll only sell 1st on that one, but there are plenty of other LNER trains from London to Edinburgh where you can change to Queen St for Glasgow. You can go to the booking office on the day and buy a walk up ticket for that but you may well want a reservation for such a long trip so are probably best advised to pick another one.

If you do have to leave after noon, this one from King's X isn't too bad either
