Avanti Standard Premium with split tickets

If I hold two Off Peak Day Returns (A to B and B to C) covering one journey A to C that doesn't involve a change of train, would I be able to buy a Standard Premium upgrade onboard at the rate applicable for the A to C journey, or would I be asked to pay for two separate upgrades A to B and B to C?

The reason I ask is because the upgrade cost for A to C is £15.00, but would be £27.50 if I had to buy two separate upgrades for A to B and B to C.

I've tried to find the information on the Avanti website but it doesn't seem obvious.

I'm fairly sure I've had a through upgrade on a split ticket so it can be done, but I wouldn't put it past some fussy guards to refuse, and if they do you are stuck with it because if you refuse you've not paid for the SP you've used up to the point they got to you.

Might be worth doing it on Seatfrog (even though they likely charge a bit more) to avoid that risk?

Yep, when you can't find any formal confirmation it does leave you in the hands of whoever.

It's only a fairly short journey - just under an hour - I'd be happy to pay £15.00 but not £27.50.

I've done that numerous times between Euston and Coventry on split tickets, and never had a problem just purchasing the one upgrade onboard for the full journey.

I would be surprised if it's an issue for most guards, split tickets are very commonplace nowadays and you are still making one journey as far as they (and everyone else) are concerned.

However as @Bletchleyite says, there will always be one or two people who try to make things difficult by charging it on a per-ticket basis. So I would prepare for this eventuality.

Thanks Yorkie, you do read a few 'horror stories' from other passengers and become a little apprehensive, but I have to say the pleasant Avanti TM looked at my tickets and issued the £15 supplement without me asking the price. Standard was full and standing and Premium was very busy too - I think it was just one carriage - but I managed to get a seat at the last free 1+1.
