I'm looking to travel Chorley (CRL) to Milton Keynes Ctl (MKC) early on Friday 27 December. I was looking at this yesterday and could see tickets for an itinerary 0734 -> 1025 changing at Manchester Piccadilly for about £40 (with a Railcard). Today the prices seem to have shot up to well over £100, which I don't understand at all because surely an off-peak single should be available for at most £45.
Are Avanti just playing their usual compulsory reservations game and denying me from buying the flexible ticket online? Is there any chance of this changing later, or should I just hope the ticket office can sell it to me on Friday morning?
For what it's worth, I'll also be travelling Birmingham to Chester on Sunday evening in case that affects any recommendations.
