I'm somewhat surprised that they didn't tell you to change at Carlisle on to the Edinburgh-Euston via Birmingham.
But, then again, maybe it's not so surprising after all.
The only options offered in what appeared to be a standard text was that our Advance tickets would be accepted on the previous train (which was not possible for us without negating the purpose of the trip) or the next one (which would arrive at Euston in the wee small hours with no way of getting home).
The simple and pragmatic solution was to accept the refund and go to Kings Cross, even though that cost more. Which is what we had originally intended to do - we were only going via Glasgow because at the time we booked, LNER had called a strike for the day we were to travel. Given the weather forecast, a direct train from Leuchars was the safer option than travelling from Dundee and changing stations in Glasgow. Pasrticularly since tgere was a possibility the Tay Road Bridge might have been closed if the wind got any stronger.

The ticket is evidence of a contract and Avanti cancelling the train does not absolve them of their obligations; the NRCoT and PRO cover such situations.

In short, don’t refund the original ticket as it’s still valid & the useless TOC concerned still has to get you to your destination and/or pay for overnight accommodation to allow you to complete the journey.

Of course, Avanti have form for making it as difficult as possible for passengers to avail themselves of their rights.
Re your last para perhaps if people litigate every time the cost will send them a message.

A business owner who ripped off my late mum in her last couple of months of life is about to find out one of the more interesting features of the small claims process. An individual taking action against a company gets to choose the venue for their advantage. I hope that he (Shropshire-based) enjoys defending the action in a North London County Court ....

I believe the 17.43 was the only service Liverpool Lime Street to Euston yesterday afternoon/evening. Not a great help to football fans ex-Anfield.

Was in this mess on the 2031 London Euston-Preston train and had to have extra stops making us 15 minutes late to arrive into Crewe (my stop), while I was still able to get on board I feel sorry for Rugby and Stafford passengers that got thrown onto our train as those stops got added on!

Got caught by this yesterday. Got a text whilst tucked up in bed on the Sleeper heading north on Thursday night that my train home yesterday evening had been cancelled (at least, it wasn't going beyond Carlisle). Staff shortage, apparently. This was the last train of the day so a hurried and much more expensive booking on LNER had to be made, as we were unable to travel any earlier.
But Avanti were very efficient in one regard - from applying for my refund to it being processed took 11 minutes.

When you say "refund", do you mean of what you'd paid for the train that was curtailed, or for the higher price you had to pay instead?

How do you think Labour will solve the problems any better than today?
They might not go out of their way to wind up the staff by creating conflict where it need not exist. Remember the ex-MD's gaffe? That was just the beginning at Avanti of open hostilities. It didn't end when he left.

Believe it or not drivers at TPE are actually knocking job offers back from Avanti as the reports are so bad about how it is to work there!!

We had one leave for Avanti and then swiftly return - despite the large pay rise!

Not Avanti related but I’m on the 1408 Edinburgh - Plymouth CrossCountry service and it is rammed to to the gunnels. Yes, it is a 4 car Voyager. Unbelievable.

I got on at Newcastle and it was shown as a 8/9 car on the platform.

It was cancelled from Dundee to Edinburgh. So maybe some unit issues?

Loads getting on to get to London due to engineering work on ECML.

A significant number of "Liverpool fans" live down south. Trains from Euston are always busy on home matchdays.

Fortunately the up Liverpool services today ran - just as well as they were exceedingly busy - and ours (1043) - did a Stafford extra call to cover a missing up Manchester. Broken rail at Tring adding to the problems but we got through OK by a weave at Ledburn and back over at Bourne End. Good job the latter was not removed a few years back being viewed as a reliability issue !!!!!! - (pretty new bit of infrastructer too)

Most ex the Pool were showing as no reservations available. Of course the Coventry corridor landslip is not helping today.
