Avanti and reservations?

After a few years am beginning to look at an interrail trip.

First surprise is that the planner is telling me that I now need a 6€ reservation between Crewe and Euston.

A couple of questions, does Coach U no longer exist? and is it possible to buy a reservation without buying a ticket?

Reservations are not actually compulsory on any UK trains except the Caledonian Sleeper. It's just in the timetable data to prevent tickets being sold without one and to allow TOCs to block sales of given trains if they're not sure if they will operate or not.

Unreserved coaches on Avanti are Coach C (all trains I think including Voyagers) and U (if present, only in 11-car sets).
