How are new stations added to ticketing systems? Ashley Down in Bristol opened over a month ago and still, Cross Country’s app ( my preferred way of buying tickets if not actually travelling ) doesn’t recognise it as a station whereas GWR recognised it immediately after opening.

It's unfortunately often still a very manual process. Most retailers need to maintain their own whitelist of fare locations and ticket type codes, or else they will accidentally retail tons of fares which the data suggests they can retail, but they actually shouldn't be retailing. Notifications are sometimes sent around about newly opening stations, but I wouldn't say they're 100% consistent.
