Automatic Ticket Gates at Huddersfield

TransPennine Express applied to put ticket gates at this station in November 2012. Planning was approved by the local council on 30 January 2013.

How long might it take for the ATGs (Automatic Ticket Gates) to be installed and running?

They are expected to be installed, and operational, in May - so we are told.

A large section of the recently enlarged concourse is currently closed off for the installation of the barriers. Presumably the barrier staff will be informed that they'll need to let wheelchair users through without tickets to access the pub- the entrance from platform 1 is the accessible route, and persons of restricted mobility are directed this way from the front of said pub.

As I mentioned before, step-free access to both establishments are via the entrances on platform 1. Hopefully the staff on the barriers will be aware of this, and have authority to allow people through as required. Though for able-bodied folks wanting a swift pint whilst changing trains it might not be so easy!

On Monday, it seemed the gateline staff were still getting to grips with operating the gates, though hopefully things will settle down. My main concern is the general resistance of Huddersfield folk to any change, which may result in congestion at the gateline. Given that the majority of station users seem to think the 'Keep Left' signs on the stairs apply to everyone but them, it's likely that it'll take 10minutes or more to get to the Leeds-bound platforms!

Huddersfield: Please be aware that the automatic ticket gates have gone live and are now operational. Any passengers leaving the train at Huddersfield please retain tickets and have them ready to exit the station.

I wonder whether TPX have had their announcements changed accordingly to let people know about the barriers at Huddersfield Station "We are now approaching Huddersfield" "Please have your tickets ready for inspection at the barrier"

Yes the automated messages have been mentioning the gates for a few weeks now.
