I'm actually quite happy with barriers, if passengers are given sufficient notice of which platform their train is leaving from.

It was a whopping 30 mins before departure yesterday.
Again seen 5 minutes a few times, guess they will keep the barriers open?

Gate watch this week:
Platform 3 today 13:00 to Picc, 10 mins notice - platform 2 had a pendo that had just come in, all gates showed green arrows but pax from platform 2 were coming through on the right, so people used the gates to the left for platform 3.
It was going OK then everything came to abrupt halt, the lady in front of me put in her ticket, spat it out, and 'Seek customer assistance' displayed on the small hardly visible LCD display. Gate wouldn't take the ticket (see my previous post), told her stand back and try again.. same thing happened, as this was happening I realized everyone was having the same problem. With time ticking on, the one VT lad on duty (all credit due) shouted for everyone to stand back then opened all the gates.
It was a very busy Train (I could hardly move in 1st!), the VT TM announced to everyone before departure for everyone to double check their advance tickets or else an 184 quid trip or whatever the price is, knowing the gates were opened.

The gates would not, so far as I know, be able to check the time on an Advance - one reason they are markedly inferior to a manual check.

Surely it's up to the passengers to check. TOCs surely wouldn't care or am I being to cynical here?

What about these new all in one tickets I've seen on this forum, can the magnetic strip store all the information?

TOC's really don't want people getting the wrong trains as it ends up causing them and the passengers grief.

It's not all about selling an Anytime ticket, despite what some of the tales of woe we read on this forum would have you believe.
