“Automated” is not how I would describe it, but last time I used it I received an email the following day with a link through which I had to submit a claim. If it were truly automated I would be paid automatically, but they don’t do that. Or didn’t, it may have changed since I last used it.

Thank you for travelling with us on Thu, 09 Feb 2023 between WILMSLOW and LONDON EUSTON.

You are currently opted-in to receive automated delay repay notifications and we believe that your journey may have been delayed entitling you to £36.20 in compensation.

To confirm or amend the details of the delay, please use the link below to review the claim and submit the claim. If you were not delayed, you don't need to take any action, but you can still use the link below to opt-out of receiving these notifications.

Oh ok so i have misunderstood ? I thought that if there was a delay avanti would send me compensation without me having to make a claim. This is why i am asking as im sure i've signed up for this service but have always had to submit a claim form . Im just wondering if i should have waited longer before filling in the form though if its automated im surprised as to why it cant be issued withing an hour or two of the train terminating as the train staff always seem to announce the number of minutes the service is delayed by

From my experience, but note that last time I interacted with Avanti on delay repay was in 2023, the previous franchise holder - Virgin - paid automatically but Avanti does not. All I got was a notification. Presumably because Avanti know that some people won't see the notification or won't bother with it.

Also my recollection is that Virgin refunded Delay Repay compensation automatically to cards used to buy advance tickets without any kind of requirement to register first. They weren’t wonderful but they were a lot better than Avanti.

UPDATE: The process is unchanged, I travelled yesterday and this morning received an email:

Thank you for travelling with us on Fri, 02 May 2025 between LONDON EUSTON and WILMSLOW.

You are currently opted-in to receive automated delay repay notifications and we believe that your journey may have been delayed entitling you to £13.48 in compensation.

I was 28 minutes late, primarily because Avanti couldn’t manage to get the train ready to leave on time, the set was in the platform a long time before departure but nobody gave Train Ready To Start until 10 minutes after booked departure time. The onboard display said the delay was caused by following a freight train, which was only the case because we were already late. Anyway, the system worked inasmuch as it did, and I expect to get some money shortly.
