As suggested by Paul Sidorczuk in the Current Trainspotters Reputation thread, I have created this thread as a spin-off to prevent that one from veering too far off topic.

These are the posts which started this discussion:-

Even going as far as to suggest they must have Aspergers

They wouldn't be wrong in that respect

The connection between Aspergers and Trains is with Trainspotting. IE collecting pointless information and repetitive tasks that lack imagination and creativity. It is NOT a connection between rail enthusiasm in general, any more than any other interest.

For the doubters take the AQ test, I suspect only a small minority on this site would gain over 32.

I know the quiz isn't supposed to be taken particularly seriously but question 24 did bug me slightly, and not just because of the dodgy spelling. It's the suggestion that preferring science/history to the arts is a possible indicator of autism:

I would rather go to the theater than to a museum.

A lot of the questions bugged me. I enjoy lots of different things, I like the theatre and I like museums! I like libraries, and I like parties! Whether I would rpefer a library to a museum depends on several factors!

Anyway I got 8, whatever that is supposed to mean, but I thought the answers were a bit lacking in choice.

Scored 37, as usual quite high on these things. But there is a MASSIVE health warning here - not even experts would claim to understand more than the surface of the autism spectrum. It is recognised that there are certain recurrent characteristics, with varying degrees, but they may pop up, in varying intensity, at any point in the spectrum.

I understand the question "I would rather go to the theater than to a museum." to be not about arts/science but whether you are more entertained by people or things (to put it somewhat unsophisticatedly)

My son is 14 and however has very high-functioning autism...Asperger's Syndrome. I am educated to PhD level but his amazing intelligence floors me! He however does not seem to be too taken with trainspotting whereas I was besotted with trains from the age of 10 for a while before I went on to buses, then aircraft...then back to trains...

As I said in the other thread, it's a totally meaningless test. There are professional ways of determining whether or not someone is autistic, and being a spectrum, it's impossible to quantify someone based on the result of a test.

I'm going to show this to Anthony, the lad with Aspergers who does house cleaning to earn a few bob, who is coming round this afternoon and see what he thinks.

I agree with passmore, it's pretty meaningless. Mrs Greenback works in the same area and has asked if it was Sacha Baron Cohen who devised the test as a joke.
