I have screenshots from a TOC's twitter team saying I can use my TOC specific ticket (not valid on that TOC) on their service to enable me to catch a connection (which I would miss due to disruption occuring after I bought the ticket)

I sent clear pictures of the tickets to the TOC who said I could travel. Does this count as valid authority? I would be willing to disclose more detail via PM but its for travel at 7AM!

although if I get on the train and the TM tells me to get off and wont accept the twitter exchange at all, then the train operated by the TOC I should be on is only 15 minutes behind.

I doubt it would be a huge problem. No idea how proactive they are elsewhere but the folks who run our twitter desk usually phone us and tell us if they've arranged/agreed something unusual for a passenger.

I've even had voicemails waiting at the start of the shift from customer relations with same.

It was all fine :)
3 guards looked at the ticket, the first accepted it no problem, the second simply said "As long as you know where youre going, I'm happy", the third said that I should be on the other TOC, but a quick glance at the tweets and he saw that I had specifically said it was for the other TOC and sent pictures of my ticket and he happily accepted it.

I'd always screenshot these conversations. That way if you can't get a signal later, you still have access - same goes for mTickets and boarding passes.

If your ticket says +connections and you are travelling on the connection part of the route before or after the main part of the journey i.e not the specific toc you are booked with then it shouldnt really be an issue.

What i mean is, if you are booked say leeds to oban VTEC and connections, then if you jump on an earlier TPE, northern or XC in order to maintain your booked connection at York, or you made an earlier connection or had to catch a later one at Edinburgh and onwards than scheduled then that shouldnt really be an issue. As long as the main booking is honoured common sense should prevail with regard to connections to the main leg of the journey. However, this is unfortunately open to interpretation not just by the staff, but to the ticket holder aswell and where connection train times arent given has led people to turn up at Leeds for the trains york departure time, or worse still find they are being charged for a new ticket simply for ensuring they are in plenty of time for the service they are booked to travel on, part of the T's and C's!

A screenshot wouldn't work with a railway mTicket as they use animations as part of the process to verify they are genuine. You don't need a signal to view them though.
