Australian governments second draft of a hgh speed rail plan. 1,748km, 144km of tunnel half of which is through Sydney. £77.87bn and could be completed by 2065!

I was wondering about the map for a while...77bn for moving Sydney south of Canberra looks like good value...not sure what the Melbournians think about becoming a suburb to the west of Sydney though

The new plan is still a mess. Should be one linear route, Brissy-Gold Coast-Port Mac-Newcastle-Sydney-Canberra-Albury-Melbourne Southern X.

They hang on to using existing alignments thinking it will be cheaper and easier, but it really isn't.

To make the plan work, they need to consider where the existing airline market is, then steal it with an equal speed train service. Running a route out to Wagga Wagga is a no-brainer. They could get the Chinese to construct it, cost a fraction, and have it built by 2018.

My initial thought was that it looks like it should naturally split into a Melbourne-Sydney route and a Sydney-Brisbane one. The Brisbane-Melbourne journey would be nearly 6 hours so I would think it would make sense to assess demand for each of the two routes from Sydney and make a case for that alone, rather than only the whole route. Not read the report yet though - am doing so now.
