The most famous horse race in Australia was held on Tuesday. To get the 100,000 people who attended the Flemington Racecourse Metro put on extra services from Flinders Street and Southern Cross with services running every 5 to 10 minutes.
The main motive power for the services were Comengs.
I went to the Arden St footbridge at Kensington and got a few photos.
Heading towards the racecourse is a 6 car Alstom refurbished unit.
Heading back to Southern Cross to collect more racegoers is a 6 car EDI refurbished unit.
EDI refurb 417M-1059T-418M and another set head racecourse bound. This train would of originated from Flinders Street.
Another race train ex Southern Cross passes by the grain mill at Kensington. The mill still has regular grain trains using it. Of note on this Comeng is the new LED marker lights. Installed because the current ones no longer meet safety standards. It also has a mustache in support of Movember.
2 Race trains arrive at Kensington. The one on the left from Southern Cross. The one on the right from Flinders Street.
Running around as a trial to improve visibility is a single Alstom and single EDI set with a new front livery. Also as part of this trial is new handrails inside the train, new seat covers and other minor modifications. All is being done to keep a 28-35 year old fleet running into the mid 2020s. From what I've been told the current livery doesn't have enough yellow on it. All units will be done eventually.
629M-1142T-630M-494M-1079T-493M head to the races.
493M at the rear. This is one of a few EDI units to have the dot matrix headboard replaced with an LED one.
