Auction treasure chest

Went along to a general auction today to bid on some collectable pottery for my mum and were were just leaving with our win when I came across 2 large boxes of railway relates stuff, so we popped back in and won the lot.

I have only had a quick flick through but there are hundreds of photos, almost all with dates, locations and general bits of information written on the back, ranging from the 50's up to the mid 90's. There are photo albums, stacks of photos, spotters books for trains, buses and other bits and bobs ranging from the early 40's. There is also a 1960 manual for southern region drivers and guards, a couple of framed photos and postcards that someone offered to buy off of us at the auction, naturally I declined and took his contact if I wanted to sell, but there must be some value if someone wanted to buy from us there and then!

It is going to take me a fair while to catalogue and scan this lot in but there must be some serious value here, I am thrilled with this lot even if there is not must in it to sell stuff on.

I will try and get some kind of list together and post it up here but scanning the hundreds of images could take some time!

Firstly, well done for winning that lovely lot. Christmas come early, eh?!

It's likely that your hoard will have more nostalgic value than pure fiscal value but, as you found out on the day, one man's tat is another man's trophy; so good luck if you decide to sell some of it on.

Have just had a half hour flick through some of the photos, there are literally hundreds of black and white photos of steam locomotives dating back to at least 1960, but there is other stuff from earlier.

More recently there are photos of class 158s and 91s first coming into service and on tests. A couple of the stand out photos show a class 91 with a MK1 post office van between it and its MK4 coaches, and also a 91 with 3 MK4s and a DVT.

It really is going to take weeks if not months to get through this lot but im looking forward to it, its a dream buy.

There are also a dozen or so copies of Railway Video Magazine on VHS from 1993, 4 and 5. Not got anything to watch them on but my father in law does.

Real interesting day, and to think I was walking past this until a Thomas the Tank photo album caught my eye!

Were there any commercial vehicle photos in the collection? I am interested if there are!

The ABCs have a value, for as has been said, nostalgia but I can imagine that they would also be useful for information purposes. I would suggest contacting Publishing Editor Nick Grant at Ian Allan Publishing in Hersham (Surrey) just to see if they might be interested in acquiring some or all for the collection there. That is if no-one else seems to want them.

I didn't buy to sell, and even if I planned to sell it wouldn't be for a good while yet. I must admit I am genuinely excited to be having the chance to see someone's much loved collection like this and only feel right that it should be shared.

But thanks for the note on contacting Ian Allen Publishing, I may well do that. The bus and car ABCs are not really interesting to me but will be to others I'm sure.

Oh, and I'm not seeing anything much in the way of commercial vehicles yet, but ill keep tabs on that one.

I don't have them with me at the minute but I am pretty sure that most of them have no writing in and some even have home made covers on to protect the cover.
