how long is a piece of string!?

it isn't about how long the statement is mate it's about it's content and it's relevance!..........my personal statement for my driving job wasn't particularly long but from what i have heard since ( and without blowing my own trumpet) i got the job over people who had done page after page!

there's no point in having 10 pages of waffle when half a page of relevant/important information answers the question they are asking.

This is a good direction to follow as you must remember that especially with guards and drivers vacancies the managers have to sift hundreds of applicants. The best tip is to ensure you get the most important parts of your statement in the first 20 lines, this way if a manager reads this bit first they will decide to put the application in the "successful" tray without reading the rest, if the first 20 lines are not relevant it may go the other way!

I'm not holding my breath... My account status still says Advertising. So either they have not updated the vacancy status to Shortlisting/ Failed after shortlisting or its has you suggest.

Yes - the telephone interviews were originally set for the w/c 16 March; provisional start date for the post was 11 May. Probably slipped a little

I'm pretty sure it did say w/c 16th March for something like 11th May start

No its over an hour but the same distance to both depots pretty much. It didn't say about being an hour in the application is this something that they look for.

Yes, long commutes (over an hour) are generally no longer acceptable within the rail industry, with fatigue being primarily responsible.

I would imagine that working an intensive 10h30 diagram, and having over 2 hours worth of travelling each day is going to have a rather negative (and dangerous!) effect over time!

An hour really is pushing the boundary, anything more than that is likely to be rejected. How will you get in if there's adverse weather? How will you get in if your car breaks down? If you're ill, how long would it take your manager to turn up at your house?

Especially when you consider, as I pointed out earlier, the start times are pretty extreme by guards standards at both of those depots.

It might not be bad news mind - I applied for two depots, and online it said I'd been rejected for one of those. When I interviewed, they told me I was still being considered for both. I ended up getting a job at a different depot to everyone else who interviewed that day.

Also, if the rumours are true, and perhaps TDK can confirm, but one of the depots concerned has several more vacancies than the other.

Just had "We regret to Inform You" emails regarding both Trainee Conductor Positions (Crewe & Chester).

I don't seem to be getting anywhere with all of these applications.

Demoralising to keep not getting past the initial applications, I feel confident that if I was able to sit the tests I'd hit a high score as well, which would prove my worth.


Does anyone know if there's any way of sitting the tests independently ?

The test are quite easy with the practice material given. I don't think many failed at the test stage from our group when I took them.

I managed to make a pigs ear of my interview though. Couldn't think of answers and lots of erm... and waffling.

Unlike me as normally I am full of confidence and think quickly on my feet.

Now I know the routine would love to get another chance but seem to keep getting the dreaded "unfortunately........." e mail.

Had an email informing me that I "unsuccessful after shortlisting"

Disappointing to say the least. I applied for a trainee conductor post with Arriva in Crewe towards the back-end of last year; made it through short-listing and the telephone interview but mucked up at the testing stage. Not even that far this time!
