Hi all.

I'm new the the forum and thought it would be worth registering to see if anyone could provide me with advice.

I have very recently been sent an e-mail by Arriva Trains Wales, stating that I have been shortlisted for a Trainee Conductor Role and for me to attend an Assessment Centre in Cardiff next Thursday.

They stated that I would be required to carry out a Verbal Test, Ticket Selling Test and Concentration Test, as well as a Structured Interview.

I have already began going through the booklet they provided me with, attempting the mock questions.

They did not state however that I would be required to conduct a Telephone Interview or take part in any Role Play.

I just have a few questions:

1) Should I still expect a Telephone Interview / any Role Play? Or would they have already mentioned this by now if it was applicable?

2) What sort of questions should I expect to answer during the Structured Interview?

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! :) Bill.

They don't send practise material for the role play. Never heard of telephone tests for this role. Role Play is standard though

Is the concentration test they sent you ticking off letters? I did a test today for Arriva for a customer service role! The concentration test they sent was nothing like the one we had to do!

What we did was listen to audio clips of train stations on a normal day. There are three things we had to listen out for trains departing! First of all the you have to hear Train ready to depart! Then a whistle then a horn from the train! In that order if any are missing or out of that order it can not leave. We had to listen out and decide if they could go or not.

Then part two was the above, also you had to listen for a customer enquiry and try and answer it at the same time.

The ticket selling test is pretty simular to the one they sent out, just have to answer if tickets are valid, if they are not giving the reasons why.

Hope this helps and good luck

I thught the Role Play would be a requirement as well. Just out of curiosity, what sort of scenarios do you think I should be expected to participate in? Emergency situations, customer care etc?

Thanks.

Also, thanks to everyone who has commented so far. Much appreciated!

Sorry to bother you all, but is there anybody who could offer a bit more advice on the role playing element of the assessment?

Hey, I'm also doing the assessment this week with arriva :) as far as I'm aware there is no role play with the interview as my friend has already been on a ATW conductor assessment and he didn't have to do one.

Good luck! What day are you doing the assessment / interview? Mine is on Thursday. Bit daunting as I've never been on one before. I didn't even expect to get through the sift, so I am suprised! Going to give it a really good shot though!

When did your friend do his assessment / interview? Perhaps the role playing comes in at a later date? Did he tell you what sort of questions he was asked during his structured interview?

Cheers, Bill.

My Husband attended the assessment on wednesday, and also got through to interview stage :D, not heard anything though so im assuming positions have been filled :(

On the positive side any trainee conductors roles that come up again, will mean that you can go straight to interview without having to sit assessment again!

good luck :D

Congratulations. I've had assessment and interview on Wednesday and was told it can take up to a week for me to find out if I got the job?!

Please don't tell me those who didn't get it will find out last... I'm really sitting on hot coals here now. :|

I find this strange, too. I hope what you say is true or they just haven't made their mind up about a few people. ;)

I'm kind of guessing they won't notify people on the weekend. So we're either really pending whilst others have a medical or maybe it depends by which interview team you've been interviewed and some just haven't come to a definitive result yet ... Or this another waiting and patience test, similar to the one after the lunch break...

I asked after the interview when I would hear and they told me because of the amount of numbers involved it was likely to be early to mid next week so I was surprised (and relieved) to get the call yesterday.

Same here, also unsuccessful. Going to look at it as a positive though. Haven't got to go through the testing again! I think i'll give them until the end of the week then ask for feedback.

Until the next time.

Unfortunately it looks like I didn't get the job. Haven't had a call or email yet, but I checked the application status online and it reads: "Unsuccessful after assessment event" ... Have just sent them an email and asked them for feedback.

Hey there. I've used their recruitment contact form on the website to ask for feedback. I find it a little odd that they would update the status before contacting us.

I'm quite gutted and upset. But what can you do except for trying again?!

Oh right yeah I'll email then if I dont hear anything tomorrow morning. I felt it was quite strange that they would update the site and not email us as Im sure a lot of people would just be checking their emails and not checking the web site as often. Im gutted too :( I left cardiff on wednesday thinking I had given it my all and was pleased how I handled the interview, will be interesting to see the feedback.

I also thought this was odd. Was wondering (secretly hoping) someone in the office put through the wrong update through by mistake. But I guess that's a long shot. Lol
