Depends on what and how many coaches it was pulling. There is a ruling on max speed depending on how many coaches and if they are mk 2 or 3s. It is in the rule book somewhere.

Yes, the 57/MkII train was limited in speed because of its limited braking power. I recall that the train would have been exempt from these limits if it had had a greater number of MkIIs in the rake (~8?), or had some MkIIIs instead, because of their better brakes. Not only is in now MkIII only, but it also has an extra set of brakes in the DVT. Better braking means higher speed limits.

Ive put up the training timetable on the traction page,if anyone wishes to see the dvt running this week,

ATW have fouled up also on the T - 12 (12 week notice period) which is required to make seat reservations possible.

I don't suppose it will worry them too much - on the odd occasion I've had a seat reservation, ATW have not put the tickets out anyway.

The official date for the ATW timetable Sept/Dec is August 25th on WG instructions, anything before that date is unofficial & remains out for consultation, although the major changes in the North have been carried out already. Your quote" it will not worry them too much" is probably an understatement for this self made shambles, I wonder what DB think about it,as this delay also holds up their excellent European timetable as well.

Any news on what will become of the (rather nice) mark 2s that are currently used on the WAG train?

Adam :D

I would say storage and long term decay or sold abroad. Arriva will have no use for them once the Mk 3s are "online".

my Holyhead informant tells me that class 57 and load four restricted to 75 mph with 4 coaches where line speed is 75 and 10mph below line speed where line speed was 90mph so 80mph would,ve been the highest speed on the coast with class 57, all to do with brake force, class 67s not affected.

Would be well suited to the Fishguard services. Having recently ridden to Fishguard and back on a packed 150/2, the Mk2 stock would provide a welcome enhancement:
-Three and a half coaches of roomy accommodation with good legroom
-Aisles that are wide enough for, and space to store, a catering trolley
-Luggage space in the brake van for suitcases/bicycles/fishing tackle*
Class 150s (even Pacers sometimes!) on the Fishguard boat train is plain wrong. A class 158 would probably do most of the time, but I think it's busy enough that it needs a 3-car 175 or 4-car 158 occasionally. Thankfully weekdays is now a 158 (so I'm told on fourms, and have seen myself on one occasion) but it needs to be upgraded to regional express stock at weekends too (I'd guess the mark2s would do the job nicely, but probably not economic given the required level of capacity, and the reversal at Carmarthen would screw it up wouldn't it?).

I agree that they will most likely join ATW's other mark2s in store, but that is an enormous waste in my opinion when ATW (and other TOCs) need so much extra capacity. I can never remember if ATW's mark2s number 18 or 22 but either way it'd be helpful. My opinion is that, at the very least, a set of mark2s should be used to provide additional services for special events such as the Beach Break Festival, Cardiff rugby matches and the Royal Welsh Show (the latter of which already has the additional services in place, but using valuable DMUs) and another set of mark2s should be put into use whenever ATW are down a 175 or 158 to help keep pacers and lesser sprinters off regional express and long-distance services.

If the mark2s are ever put into use on regular ATW services then Swansea/Cardiff - Manchester or Holyhead/Bangor/Llandundo - Manchester would make the most sense I expect. Fishguard, I think, is a way down the list, it doesn't require the capacity year-round like other routes do.

For South Wales members, The draft Timetable shows an extra carriage on the busy 1730ish DMU to Swansea area, plus extra carriage on certain Cardiff to Manchester 175s due to overcrowding.

Bob
Plus the spin by Mike Bagshaws intoduction says
142 extra seats on 0546 Llandudno Junction and 0712 Chester both to Manchester.
148 extra daily seats on busiest trains Cardiff to Manchester.
extra 74 seats on 1739 Cardiff to Milford Haven.
Re-timing to provide extra 160 daily seats commuting into Swansea during morning peak.

Bob
Where does the extra carriage on 17:39 Cardiff - Milford Haven come from, a result of the service reduction to Llandudno (I assume it will be a 3-car 175, not 158+153)? Also, where do the 142, 148 and 160 extra seats come from? Do the time tables have details of unit diagraming? If so I may have to pm you for a copy.

I don't think even a 3-car 175 would be enough for the 17:39, I still think running a later service from Cardiff with a 158 via the Swansea District Line with a connection into the earlier service at Carmarthen would be the best solution for S.W.Wales passengers (for Fishguard the 17:39 is the last train of the day, and I'm concerned some Fishguard passengers might be unable to board it due to crowding).

I have to agree with the point raised about the 17:39 departure from Cardiff Central to Milford Haven I have used it when a 3 carriage class 175 has been used and it was still very overcrowded. What is needed is a 4 carriage train for that service at least between Cardiff Central & Swansea.

I can only assume at this stage without having seen the Diagrams that the 1739 Diagram will become a 3 Car possibley ade available as a result of revised North Wales services

I am booked on the WAG express on 11/09/12 for one last go in the Marks 2s. They will be sorely missed with their IC70 seats and pictures of castles on the bulkheads. They remind me of when Anglia used to run Mark 2s out of LST. I hope they find another use. Let's hope the Mark 3s are even better. :)

There is talk on the recent edition of the NWCR Notice Board that the MK3s may not be ready in time and that to start with the service will be top and tail with the existing MK2s. I must say it's been very quite on the MK3 front...

The Mark3s will be better, well they are in the Pullman works, anything Pullman should be good, I hear talk(reliable source) of a special via Wrexham before 17th Sept up & down with the Mark 3s plus DVT, don't think I will be invited :(

Grammer seats will be nice, with those lovely headrests. :)
How can they do a demo run if the Mark 3s aren't ready?
Aww, you never know your luck, they might invite you :P

There is a push to get into the good books again after the timetable cock up on this line, however six weeks to end of lead time at Pullman, I am sure we shall see half of the stock ready by 10th Sept at least, Pullman after all are professional, if some at the toc appear weak.

ive been told that the layout will be all table and seat in the mk3s,there wont be any airline seats so it remains to be seen if everyone will have a proper window view or will some have bulkheads in the way.

Nothing new at all, most TOCs miss it on lots of occasions. Quite often bidding at T-2.

I remember a period when people were departing on a Friday for a weekend away and I did not have the times for their return on Sunday. It was interesting.

written response from WG rail Minister to Aberconwy A.M.

Janet Finch-Saunders (Aberconwy): What mechanisms are there in place to monitor whether train operating companies in receipt of Welsh Government funds comply with their consultation obligations before implementing changes to service. (WAQ61029)

Carl Sargeant: Arriva Trains Wales’ franchise agreement requires it to consult with Passenger Focus and Local Authorities about any significant permanent changes to the pattern of passenger services. Service changes are monitored routinely by my officials and are discussed with Arriva Trains Wales at regular franchise monitoring meetings. These discussions will include consideration of third party consultation replies.

Result WG Rail Unit insisted on a months consultation delaying the ATW September timetable to Aug 24th

September 24th you mean?

No the consultation on orders of WG ends on August 24th, this Friday, perhaps I should have made this clear.
all stakeholders will have submitted final comments by now, then ATW will submit the amended draft timetable to WG Rail unit for signing off. The major changes were already inserted in this draft prior to its circulation to stakeholders which many of you have already seen, this follows the July release on the web of a botched final version which was taken down days later after complaints about its content.

It is likely the new timetable for September 15th/Dec 8th will appear on the web from next week,
