ATW station environmental station operatives

Hey guys

Recently applied for ATW station operative post in Swansea in Llanelli.

Hopefully this job will get me my foot in the door to finally have a career in the railway.

2 things to ask..Ive already past all the conductor tests with ATW but failed at the interview...Will this help or hinder me when applying for this post?

ie. It shows my determination to get on the trains, ive already shown that im pretty good as in completeing the tests and getting to the interview etc

Lastly, are there any assessments with post such as tests or is it just a straight forward interview?

It won't hinder you at all, it will be an advantage if anything as the roles are completely different.

Just don't tell them you want to be a conductor or driver if they ask

Why shouldn't I say anything? Surely it looks good that I want career progression?

It's because they won't want to train you up on the stations grades for you to then bugger off to be a conductor a few months down the line, they will want you to progress within the stations grade if anything, what you do once you're in is your business. I've seen people come into interviews and announce they want to be a driver etc and it doesn't go down well. P.s I work in stations

When you mean station grades do you mean going from an environmental operative- supervisor-duty manager- station manager etc?

In my organisation we often get people applying for roles they aren't really intereste din in order to be eligible to apply for all of th ejuicy roels that are normally advertised internally only.

Managers don't want to hear that is the reason for applying though! As stated by HSTFan, what you do once you ar ein is up to you, but it might not be wise to annoucne at the interview that you see this post as a stepping stone to getting in to the train crew grades.

I would probably express my ambitions in a more general manner, by saying that once I had been working in the post at a satisfactory level for a few years, I might be ready for a new challenge in a different type of role.
