My grandmother was told in the ticket office at Aberystwyth (when she queried the fact the ticket machine only had 1 set of 'reservations' (coach * seat ***) for the two advance tickets (hers and mine)) that all ATW advance tickets now default to coming without reservations (and pointed out the reservations now had coach * seats *** ***). A reservation must be specially requested now, the woman in the ticket office told us, I assume that means you now have to phone or use a ticket office to get a real reservation.

Oh excellent, this should help get the students of Bangor University home for Christmas on December 22, the local ATW services are always packed when students undergo the thrice-annual mass-exodus of Bangor :P These trains don't appear to be in the system yet (OTT/RTT).

Bangor Uni will be closed well before Dec 22 Adam, is this to relieve the VT service which sees the Londons axed all week etc,plus the rumour about Gerald not running & replaced by a 175 on Dec 27/28 seems confirmed plus Dec 22 as well.

I go to Bangor University, and Friday 21st December is the last day of lectures for people on my course (Chemistry) :P Some courses finish earlier than that, but quite a few of my friends are going home on the 22nd
I myself am going home on the 23rd, using the Nuneaton-Coventry-Banbury-Euston blockade buster, which I assume will be a double Voyager. I'm not really sure, but I have a friend in Cambridge who is going home for Christmas Holidays today :P It is certainly not better accommodation as the house I am in at the moment is so damp that the paint is actually running off the walls and pooling at the bottom :P

Then Bangor must be the only uni having a lecture etc so late in Dec, Glyndwer closes earlier due to so many foreign students going home,

On Dec 23/24 there is an engineering blockade taking possession of all lines near Hemel Hempstead. Virgin are running Voyagers down the Chiltern route so people can still get into London, and these service are nicknamed "blockade busters". They are normally 10 car 221s, but 15 car 221s and the Pretendolino with T&T 57s have been used before. I think they are only using 10 car 221s this time, though and if anyone could confirm/deny this then that would be great
We do finish unusually late. I wasn't best pleased myself when I saw my timetable.

Friends daughter finishes on the 20th at Bangor.hes just told me.
No doubt the ATW 67/ATW will be in use to make up for some of the Voyagers transferred to the Chiltern line.

I would wager that the 0850 EUS-HHD and 1438 HHD-EUS will only be a single Voyager, and that quite a few (or all) Birmingham - Scotland workings will be Pendolinos. The extra ATW trains are still not showing on any ticketing or OpenData websites.

Hang on, the WCML is open as usual on Saturday so maybe things will run as normal, and the ATW LHCS services are purely there to increase capacity for students/ferry passengers/christmas shoppers etc.

This is not true - I have in my posession seat reservations for an ATW service which I booked entirely online through another operator.

On Sat Dec 22, I think all the usual trains are running (the blockade does not start till 2200), so why are ATW extras needed?

ATW reservations were offered & given to my wife last week for travel on club 55, from Wrexham to Newport, booked on line.
One was for travel on Gerald, the other was from Newport.
Yet when I booked to Cardiff on the same system, a few weeks ago,no seat reservations were offered or available

I used Virgin Trains, but thinking about it I'm sure I've had them in the past when using Southern, too.
As a seperate note - is the Cardiff to Holyhead WAG reading as normal midweek through the Christmas/New Year period?

It works Holyhead - Cardiff on 24th and returns northwards again on the 28th.
There is an 18:21 from Cardiff to Holyhead on the 27th advertised as having 'Bar/Bistro' in the timetable. I thought this was it - is it not? A shame, I was tempted to have a go!
ATW used to issue resevations online I think, and I just managed to get a reservation for my Grandmother's club 55 ticket but not my advance single, so I guess it is only advance tickets they have withdrawn online reservations from.

It's swings and roundabouts. As Christmas slowly inches through the week from year to year, the end of semester kept getting a day earlier (21st, 20th, 19th...) until all of a sudden there's room for an extra week before breaking up. When I was studying at Bangor five years or so ago (Electronics) we could only fit eleven weeks of lectures in before Christmas, and had to have week 12 in January before the exam season: a lame-duck week if ever there was one.
Friends of mine studying here in Cardiff (Glamorgan, specifically) are in lectures until the 22nd as well.
Yes, I guess, but my question is its advertised in the timetable as having the full service. Why is this, if its not running?

Without wish to stray off topic, the other reason the dates of academic terms vary is not only because Xmas Day moves forward through the week but because Easter can fall anywhere between March 22nd and April 25th. In my 1st year in Uni we broke up on Dec 8th because Easter was early that year but still ended up with irregular lengths of terms.
Anyway, back to the Premier service. How far in advance do you have to book 1st class? Is it up to two hours before departure like other reservable trains? From what I've seen it can only seat 14 or 15 or so but presumably the train staff know how many to expect and wouldn't turn away anybody who wished to upgrade on board?
