I dont know the menu as I wont use First Class my decision only, but I can tell you those of us who have used Mark3 Strandard have been very impressed, the train itself (seen on Wed) in the morning at Wrexham when the wife boarded the stock was immaculate, I had to smile when a male said "The engine is very quiet,is it electric" he was referring to the DVT leading with first & 67 on the rear, so in a way he was right:)

See post#252, and subsequent comment. I believe they have 3 menus which rotate, but I wouldn't be surprised if they offer some sort of festive offering over Christmas.

Dec 21st Last day of Gerald(premier service) until 2nd of Jan?, ATW staff think a 175 will be used on 27th/28th Dec & 2nd Jan. Anyone else heard this.
Bob
So if that comes to pass, will the Cardiff assembly be making a subsidy payment deduction for the days when a "premier service" is not operated ?
Perhaps someone should email the relevant minister and then see what his comments are.<D

You have a good point, however the 95% who use Gerald will be on leave,so in my opinion there is no requirement to run it,even a 175 would only be lightly used departing Holyhead at 0525 on 27th/29th December, certainly the return at 1821 would carry fresh air

18 21 Cardiff to Holyhead tonight being worked by 3 Coach 175. No catering.
Delayed 113 miutes Newport to Abergavenny due flooding and terminating Chester. The Coast line closed beyond Llandudno Jn due flooding. I can only assume the Loco Hauled did not run down this morning due flooding on Coast.

Personally don't mind Cambrian being never provided of course that Cambrian train connect properly with electric service at Shrewsbury unlike today's dogs dinner. Since Oct 29 line speeds increase I've been told of trains arriving in Shrewsbury 3/4 minutes earlier, there may yet be hope of connections to Wrexham,/Chester/N Wales from Cambrian improving.
Are there more linespeed improvments to come this weekend? (Weshpool - Shrewsbury is closed on Sunday...)

interesting talk on BBC Parliament Sunday Evening about the North Wales wires, things seem to be more on the table.
1.Holyhead Crewe positive
2.Chester Newport some time in the future
3.Cambrian never
Holyhead - Crewe has a positive case for wiring? I assume that includes Llandudno Junc. - Llandudno? Still, even so wiring all the way to Holyhead for an hourly class 175 as far as Llandudno Juc. and the Voyager service (nearly all ATW services head south at Chester onto the Marches line which you say is further down the list) seems to has a much lessor case in my book than Swindon - Cheltenham - Severn Tunnel Junc. for a proposed hourly IEP, perhaps a 2-hourly Swindon - Chelteham stopper and an hourly Cardiff - Cheltenham ATW service. That is unless somebody has seen sense and Holyhead will be served in future mostly by Manchester or Crewe services, with most Marches line trains terminating at Chester except a couple of WAG-Express-type offerings.

I had to smile when a male said "The engine is very quiet,is it electric" he was referring to the DVT leading with first & 67 on the rear, so in a way he was right:)
Since the DVT is neither an engine nor electric the only respect he was correct in was that the DVT is quiet.

Thanks for giving this some publicity because Arriva certainly won't!

Consist: 67003, 10259, 12178, 12180, 12176, 12177, 82306
Is that 5 TSOs or 4 TSOs and the first class buffet again (was the buffet locked out of use last time?)

its too awkward to copy it. Interestingly, besides the Secretary Of State bringing together a crack team he says the current three hour journey to London from Junction could be cut by an hour. Whatever the politics this Minister has North Wales electrics on his agenda, unlike the previous Minister who thought Wales ended at Abergavenny, or thats the impression I gained

Sorry old friend, but I agree the DVT is not not electric traction, it does however have a bank of batteries, a problem in training sessions when they went flat.[/QUOTE]

Aye, it only showed up on National Rail yesterday!

EDIT: No mention of it on here: http://www.arrivatrainswales.co.uk/Templates/News.aspx?pageid=3704

But it does say the following:

Allow for weather conditions when queuing - ensure you are wearing warm clothing, hat, scarf, gloves, waterproof coat and suitable footwear and bring an umbrella.

Sounds like a school trip...

Much as I applaud David Jones' stand for the NW Coast Line to be electrified, I wonder about his claim that the journey from London to Llandudno Junction could be cut by up to an hour!

Given today's voyagers take between 2hrs.50m & 3 hrs, and the best timing with 125mph tilt between Euston & Crewe is around 1hr 30m, that only leaves 30 minutes for the 65 miles to the Junction, without allowing for the inconvenience of stopping for passengers to alight at wayside halts such as Chester or Rhyl. :)

At least it doesn't tell you to hold hands nicely with your partner and walk in an orderly line through Cardiff. :)

Oh sorry, I didn't realise that, I assumed it recieved its power from the locomotive via the same system that powers the interior lighting in the passenger coaches. How much are the batteries used for, and are they charged by the loco or do they have to charge them in the depot?

Fair play to the new Welsh Secretary, the needs of North Wales are on his agenda. I'm afraid that I agree that Mrs Gillan was too focused on the M4 corridor!!

Mr Sergeant starting too look distinctly out of his depth on rail issues on Wales, all he seems to have to offer is some stock quote on "improving linkages between NE Wales and the electrified routes around Merseyside...!".

Talking and doing are entirely different things, and Mr Jones is the one doing the latter by the looks of things.

A time distance map of Wales from London by train would be interesting. Newtown is around 3 hrs 30 mins by changing at New St.

At least the Minister is listening(Carl Sgt), he would know chapter & verse about Merseyrail, his patch as AM is next door to it,as for David Jones, he does know about North Wales rail in the many conversations I have had with him. & I don't vote for either(Clwyd South). There was no better time to get the North on the Railway agenda, for one dynamic good reason.
Both David Jones Secretary Of State for Wales & Carl Sgt in charge of Wales Rail, both have North Wales Consituences.

David Jones is MP for Clwyd West actually (my MP), despite being east of the Clwyd!
I reckon 2h20m is the shortest possible time for LLJ from Euston.
90min to Crewe, 20 to Chester, 30 to LLJ.
But it might be 2h with HS2!

The money will be there with next round of EU funding...this really would be a positive legacy.

I seem to recall seeing such a thing once (actually, I think it was the whole UK), the Cambrian Coast line was very long if I remember correctly. Unfortunatly I can't find it now though.

So, if he knows about the north Wales rail suituation, is he developing plans to reduce the amount of traffic that reverses at Chester to use the futher-down-the-electrification-list Marches line? Replacing the Holyhead - Cardiff (with the exception of Gerald and a reverse working) and Holyhead - Birmingham services with Holyhead - Crewe trains would add 1tph to the case for wires between Holyhead and Llandudno Junc....

I know David Jones he is in regular contact with the Westminster Rail Minister as he is with the WG rail Minister, but we have the system of station Management=
Chester hub is Managed by ATW on behalf of WG,as are Shrewsbury & Hereford Hubs, although for a change everyone wants to get around the table which includes the County Councils. The double line between Rossett & Saltney of which work starts in weeks, should spur them on. The Counties of Cheshire West/East & Salop have complained they have been kept out of input as to ATW timetables for example, unlike their Welsh counterparts, I hope it all comes together sooner the better.
Under Mrs Gillan North Wales Rail would never have been discussed like it is now.

At least she played a role in getting South Wales electrification, but I'm afraid it seemed like the only rail issue Mrs Gillan is truly passionate sbout is stopping HS2...

Unit starting from Bangor this morning and as the line is now closed west of the Junction I assume it'll be caped there.

Oh, agreed - totally.
I just queried his claim that services would be reduced by up to one hour.

From todays North Wales Newsboard below

The week up to the publication of this issue has seen storms and flooding in several parts of Britain, including North Wales, with the line intermittently blocked in several places. Problems between Bangor and Holyhead caused difficulties for the loco-hauled Premier service, and the Holyhead - Cardiff and return rugby special using its rolling stock which operated on Saturday 24 November. This train ran southbound as planned, propelled by 67 003, as Jack Bowley's pictures from Colwyn Bay show, but the return trip had to terminate at Crewe, although the empty train did make it back to Holyhead on Sunday, only to be trapped at Holyhead the next morning so the Premier train had to be run by a Class 175 starting at Bangor.
