I am hopefully paying a visit to Crewe station and heritage centre on Monday. Whilst at the station I hope to snap a few 175s. Just checked on realtimetrains for what I can expect, but passing AW services are shown as being booked for Sprinter. Am I right in thinking they may well actually be 175s in some cases? And this is just an anomaly on the site?

175s appear on most diagrams through Crewe operated by ATW. Most likely to find them running Manchester - South Wales and vice versa.

The Manchester - Marches - S Wales are almost exclusively 175s

They're timed for sprinters in case there is a unit swap.

They might as well be timed for a bloody hand cart they're never on time leaving Crewe!

"Realtimetrains" and "opentraintimes" are not sutiable for identifying the diagrammed type of unit. These entries are purely for timing purposes, i.e. a 90 mph uinit quote fits all that are capable of running at this speed. As stated earlier, all 175s on Manchester to Marches but with the odd exception and unscheduled.

175s are almost exclusively used on the Manchester services, although with it being a Bank Holiday, there maybe a few swapped sets! My friend ended up with 150229 a few weeks ago, on a journey nearing five hours.

Just FYI if you have a bit of spare time and wanted a few more: the hourly Chester - Man. Picc. services are (almost?) always 175s too, but the Crewe - Chester twice-hourly shuttles usually 150s.

...or you could take a 175 to Shrewsbury where you will then catch 175s on the Holyhead-South Wales services as well as the Manchester ones!

In my experience the southbound services usually arrive in Crewe early ...

The northbound too. I've caught the 0435 from Cardiff which gets into Crewe at 0725. I've then caught the 0733 Glasgow service in time, even though all journey planners recommend waiting for the 0809 instead!

quite a few 175s taken off North Wales/Manchester runs, as explained here from last weeks North Wales Rail newsboard
Since the last timetable change, Class 158 units have been seen regularly on the Manchester - Llandudno service, which for some years past monopolised by 175s except during shortages. The key reason for this is the re-appearance of a Manchester - Holyhead 'boat train' in the form of two through coaches attached to the 08:50 Manchester - Llandudno as far as Chester where they are detached and run limited-stop to Holyhead. Class 158s, with their end corridor connections make it possible for one conductor to reach all of the combined train. The 158 that goes to Llandudno returns with the 11:44 Llandudno - Manchester Piccadilly, where it spends the customary sojourn in the loop siding beyond the station, before returning as the 14:50 Manchester - Llandudno. 158 822 is seen on thus service passing Deansgate station in our picture above, which dates, like all those in this item, on 17 April. Oddly perhaps, the Holyhead service does not run at weekends when more passengers for the ferry to Ireland might be around.

Two early morning Chester/Manchester 3 car 175s have been replaced by 4 car 158s to alleviate overcrowding
