I was on a doubled up 150 crewe to chester the other week, I noticed one of the trains had green seats but new livery. Are the green seats new or is that 150 from another TOC which was leased or something. Or is that the only 150 that never had its seats refurbished.

Think all the ATW 150s lost their Valley Lines interiors years ago, think they're going through another refurb currently.

I think at least one class 150 still has the Valley Lines seat covers while you have some who retain the covers from their days with Scotrail or Wessex Trains

Do they all have Chapman seating, or do some still have Ashbournes?

They all have Chapman seating but some of the Valley Lines units still retain the Valley Lines moquette. I believe at least one was fitted with new seat covers a while ago mind.

All the Scotrail and Wessex units have ATW seat covers don't they? The Scotrail units still had the Ashbourne seating when they arrived at ATW IIRC. The Wessex units have the Arriva seat covers but everything else in untouched from the Wessex interior, so still pink grab handles and poles.

150280, which had its Valley Lines seat covers when it went to Crown Point on hire, has since been given the newer blue moquette although I have seen two or three other ex-Valley Lines units still with red and green.

The ex-Anglia (followed by Central Trains) and ex-ScotRail units all have the newer blue moquette, and the ex-Wessex units have blue moquette but with pink handles/poles.

Interestingly enough, last time I went on 150245 it still had the original door buttons rather than the newer type seen on the other 150s. Could this have been something to do with the fact that it was the only 150 to transfer directly from ONE to ATW rather than operating with Central Trains for a while?

I noticed last Sunday that former Valley Lines unit 150278 has received both the new livery and the new grey seat covers (minus the tip ups). The interior walls remain unpainted in grey though like the other ex Valley Lines and Wessex units. I know another ex Valley Lines unit, 150279 has received the new livery too, however its interior hasn't been touched since its Valley Lines refurbishment. The other ex Valley Lines units could do with having some work to their interior soon as they're quite dark and worn inside now, especially in comparison to the ex Scotrail and Central units.

If that's the low back seating, then yes they did for quite a while. Made for some less than comfortable journeys when doing things like Cardiff or Hereford to Crewe/Manchester on them at the time. Especially if you've bought a hot drink beforehand then find out it's one of those trains, less than comfortable...

Think 150921 and 927 still have those seats, same for the ex-CT 150s I believe with Northern.

Those are the ones yes. All the FGW 150/1s still have them, as well as 150202 and 150216. London Midland's 3 also still have them as do all the ex-LM and ex-ATN 150s with Northern.

Since the 150s transferred to ATW far more 150s have transferred into the fleet than the number which transferred to ATW anyway, so they never were truly surplus to requirements, they just were based on the outdated passenger numbers used by the DfT when the Great Western franchise was let.

No. When the ex Anglian units were transferred to Arriva Trains Wales they had a different type of Chapman seating with a gap on the top of the seats (I cannot think of the correct term!). Somewhere I have a photo of 150213 at Newbridge shortly after the Ebbw Vale Line reopened in February 2008 where you can clearly see the different type of Chapman seating.

They were refurbished during 2008 to the same style as the ex Scotrail units; though I think that all the ex Anglia units that were transferred as part of that cascade retained their carriage numbers in the interior above the gangway doors between the carriages. 150245 was transferred before the other ex Anglia units and is unique in retaining the original BR door controls, though its interior was refurbished to the same standard as the Scotrail units.

Writing this post, I really feel that I've spent too much time around 150s on the valley lines!

THANK YOU!!!

Think the replacement seating is primarious or something

I must say I am impressed with ATW. Their trains look incredibly smart from the outside and they are lucky in so far as their pacers have decent seating. I used to think they were very bad with lots of old liveries and little sign of investment. I guess the welsh government got their act together.

The 153s look immaculate! I quite like the livery as well..

I think it is Primarius seating, as Chapman don't exist any more. ATW's fleet may look nice from the outside but lots of the interiors are pretty poor, especially the older 150 refurbs and the Pacers with their Valley Line green. Before the fairly recent 158 refurbishment they were awful too.

The actual seat design is the same, it's just now manufactured by Primarius rather than Chapman.

Almost the same. There are some minor differences, the seat back table is a different design and I believe the handgrip is too.

Not all the 153s look immaculate. 153353 and 367 look decent, but the rest of the fleet look tired. 153327 is completely faded on one side, and is still running around with a large graffiti tag on its roof above the new cab's driver side that the 'artist' (using the term very, very loosely...) dated 11-8-10.

The pacers have decent interiors compared to the ex First North Western and Merseyrail sponsored refurbishments; however, the 143s with the original Valley Line seating look incredibly worn inside, espeically when compared to First Great Western's recently refurbished exams. Even some of the 142s that have been reupholstered recently look tired. In addition, although there is little Arriva can do about it, 11 years of running around the valleys hasn't been kind to the units and I don't think a single unit's seats and windows has not been marked by vandals at one point or another.

The 150s are hit and miss too. The ex Anglia and Scotrail units are decent, but the ex Wessex and Valley Lines units are worn inside. I caught an ex Wessex 150 the other day and its interior was quite worn to say the least, with faded paint and even brown coloured cracks on the bulkhead.

The 175s and 158s are well looked after (though the 158s before their recent work were rather grim to say the least), but as they're long distance I suppose they have to be. For the local units there is less incentive as they only do short journeys, and unfortunately, a minority of passengers don't look after them.
