Is there a sudden shortage of Pacers and 150s in Arriva land at the moment? I've noticed one of the units on the City Line (in Cardiff) has been a 153 for the past three days!! Normally 153s only appear on Saturdays!

No that's how they have strengthened the Pembroke Dock trains this year by swapping units off city line, ATW's 150 fleet are being repainted as well so they haven't as many available as normal.

I see. However, a Pacer has 106 seats, a 153 has 72. That's a loss of 34 seats per journey!

153362 worked the 0804 Radyr to Coryton this morning (I only know as it's just passed my house with the return working), I bet that was fun!!

Even during the peaks a 153 seems to cope ok with the loads on the cityline services

The 34 'lost' seats are needed in West Wales during the sumemr period as families head off to Tenby. This is a longer journey than the City Line, where people may occasionally have to stand for 10-15 minutes (on a bad day).

Of course, Pacers are not ideal to run to Pembroke Dock, but there doesn't seem to be much else available...

It's a fair point. I'm just confused as to why this has only been decided as of now in 2013; surely this has been the case for years previously?

I think they're fine, to be honest. Just like the Barry Island line.

I was wondering if you know what the passenger loadings loadings are on the City Line and Coryton routes. It would have been established beforehand if the capacity was sufficient.

I'm not too sure on the loadings exactly; I know they would be fairly minimal in the afternoons but in the peaks I imagine it'd be quite busy. I guess the City Line will effectively be like the Underground, standing room only on a little stopping service like Greenback said for 10 to 15 minutes!

In one of the rail magazines, cant recall which it was, it said that all 3 City line diagrams would be 153s? However im sure its 2 x 153s and a pacer?

Also it said that all HOW would be 150s! That would leave too many spare 153s and not enough 150s if that was the case and ive seen 153s still used on HOW diagrams apart from the one that does swanline 1710 later in the day.

2 X 153s on City Lime. The third one cannot be worked by a 153 as it goes to Taffs Well in the morning and 153s are not cleared to run north of Radyr. The info on the HOW, I suggest, is not quite accurate, only 1 Diagram a 150.
