Today, whilst on a trip to Chester, I crossed over the rail bridge near to Roodee Junction, just after I crossed the bridge, I could hear a train approaching the bridge.

Looked through a small gap in the trees to see an Arriva 57 T&T and Arriva rolling stock. There didn't seem to be any passengers on board so it must have been an ECS.

On Wikipedia, it says that ATW have a daily express service from Cardiff and Holyhead with Mark 2 rolling stock. Therefore, the 57s must have been 57314 and 57315.

I've never heard of these workings before. How often do they run?

PS: The train was heading towards Chester at about 11:55.

Once in the morning from Holyhead to Cardiff, with a return in the evening. The train is known as 'Gerald of Wales'.

Oh right! Thanks for the info. Strange, I've never heard of them.

So the 1020 is likely to be the one I saw.
Would the train call at Chester and then run to Cardiff via Wrexham or another way?

Nope, via Crewe and Shrewsbury.

The loco hauled set is normally only used on weekdays, but as mentioned previously, it is also used to provide additional capacity on key sporting event days.

Do you mean the refurb of the extra standard coaches on this special,I note the Premier dinner & first class were riot used.

Unlikely to be run as a soccer special, as yesterdays rugex from reports was lightly used & as usual poorly advertised.

Bob

While I was on it from Crewe - Shrewsbury, most people didn't even know it was running, there was the odd rugby fan here and there but there's no way it could have needed more than a 158 to run it really!... they really need to advertise earlier and get people off the 175 (Via Gobowen) which runs just behind it!

Thanks for the confirmation of poor advertising & little use by fare paying passengers, seems like the few that knew about it must have had a close connection with with the toc.
