The 1510 from Swansea has the majority of the time I used it been a 175 since it was extended beyond Cardiff to Chester.

There is a possibility that a class 150 could be used however if a 175 is required elsewhere

Chaps,

This is surely not a Class 150, is it? I notice all the other long distance diagrams that you'd get a 175 on are timetabled at 100mph not 75mph....
The number of times people post on this Forum that the Classes shewn are not necessarily what is diagrammed but as for whar trains are timed. It is diagrammed for a 175 but for some particular reason ATW require it to be timed at 75mph maximum. This could indicate that it could be worked by a 150 etc in the event of non-availability of 175

The timings used are for a a Class 150/153/155/156 DMU - that doesn't mean it'll actually run with it.

I've seen 4 car 150s working services to and from Manchester Piccadilly before, so it's entirely possible that a 150 will turn up on long distance routes!

Arriva regularly use Sprinters on the Conwy Valley and Borderlands line (as well as Chester-Crewe sometimes), but they're serviced down at Cardiff Canton, so they need to be swapped over for maintainance. Now, joining the dots, that unit seems to do:

  • 5B65 1307 Cardiff Canton Depot - Cardiff Central
  • 2B65 1315 Cardiff Central - Swansea
  • 1W18 1510 Swansea to Chester
  • 5D18 1910 Chester to Chester Depot

This can be used to get a Sprinter unit from Cardiff up to Chester if needed, and because it's timed for 75mph it won't muck up the timetable doing so. But as mentioned, it doesn't have to be a Sprinter.

Been on a few over the years including Cardiff to Holyheads, the fact is that it doesn't take much and ATW have a shortage of long distance units to maintain the tt.

I didn't realise ATW's 150s used on the Conwy Valley line are serviced at Cardiff.
I see they're parked at Chester depot overnight - don't they have the facilities there to service them?

Canton Depot is the only ATW location for full maintenance on 150s. There are no servicing facilities at Chester for other than 175s. They are cleaned overnight but cycle round so they are either at Canton or Crewe (LNWR Depot) where they are serviced and can recieve light attention every other night. The Depot at Chester is owned by Alstom and exclusively for 175s.

Ah - thank you.

Thinking about it, I suppose that's why the Conwy unit goes to Crewe on the 2145 from Llandudno.
I always presumed it then went ECS back to Chester.

Chester does do fuel point exams on behalf of ATW and there will normally be at least one 150 or 158 come onto the depot during a night shift , also if a Canton unit has an oil or air leak in traffic ATW will bring the unit on for Alstom to have a look and Alstom also carry out the station fitter role for Chester .

Normally 2 150's spend the night at LNWR at Crewe (along with 1 153 and at least 2 158s), one from the Llandudno and one from the 21:55 Cardiff-Crewe. They go out empty stock early the next morning, one to Chester and one to Shrewsbury.

The 21:55 Cardiff-Crewe and 23:08 Shrewsbury-Cardiff are the only trains normally booked for 150's on a weekday and are used to transfer sets between north and south - although they can be seen on other services at times of disruption, and are booked to work more services on Sundays. No 153's booked between Newport and Craven Arms but they do occasionally turn up, including attached to 150's on the above services. Those sets normally swap between north and south via the HOW line.

That service is almost always a 2-coach 175 Mon-Fri. It starts off with the 05:50 Manchester to Llandudno, then forms the 08:30 Llandudno to Cardiff, 13:15 Cardiff to Swansea and finally the 15:10 from Swansea to Chester. The unit comes off Chester depot in the morning and goes back in there at night.

Nowadays there seems to be more diagram inter-working between the units booked for Marches turns and North Wales-Manchester ones; up until a year or so ago they were kept separate. The 12:50 Manchester-Llandudno being another example as it now starts off in Cardiff during the week, think this arrangement began in September 2012. Wondering whether sooner or later we'll see through services between Llandudno and Carmarthen/Milford Haven via Manchester?

The cross diagramming between South Wales and Manchester started last year with the revision of morning services on the North Wales Coast, i.e. Llandudnos running to Holyhead and vice versa or turning round at Bangor to squeeze out some extra capacity.

Yes. The diagram is as follows:

1H78 0334 Chester to Manchester Piccadilly
1D30 0550 Manchester Piccadilly to Llandudno
2D55 0802 Llandudno to Llandudno Junction
2D56 0817 Llandudno Junction to Llandudno
1V93 0830 Llandudno to Cardiff Central
2B65 1314 Cardiff Central to Swansea
1W18 1510 Swansea to Chester

175006 worked it on 22nd January, 175003 worked it on 28th January and 175008 worked it on 30th January.

Well the 1040 Holyhead to Llanelli must be an example of this?

Also, there was a period where the 0425 from Holyhead ran right through to Milford Haven, although IIRC that may have been only because of engineering works.

Ah yeah the 10:40 from Holyhead is booked as the same unit that works the 07:50 Manchester to Holyhead - think this one also works back to Chester from Cardiff in the evening though not sure what time.

I remember that! It was summer 2011 and was noticeable because the 06:30 Manchester to Milford Haven (which calls at my place of work) was terminating at Cardiff instead, to allow for the train from Holyhead to carry on westwards. Don't think it was engineering works though I don't know why it was like that - was an odd one and only lasted through that summer IIRC.

Returns on 16 45 Llanelli to Chester. The 06 30 Manchester to Milford Haven swapped when the calling pattern on the Marches changed but changed back to fit in with desired diagram alterations. Don't ask me what they were now.
