I've been on coupling / uncoupling units at Shrewsbury and Machynlleth before and the 158s make a right bang, but it all goes very smoothly. They were very procedural about it over arrive, all doors release, then announcement and close them all again, do the coupling / uncoupling and then release all doors a second time and check everyone is in the correct unit, even though it was already departure time.

Not quite as seamless as Southern's operations at Haywards Heath and Horsham though, where you barely feel a thing and iirc get automatic announcements throughout.

The difference is over there people have personal responsibility and personal accountability, unlike here!
Is this because health and safety has said we can't have this one is it lawyers helping with suing that have made this?

In Malta they have an annual run holding statues on Easter Monday. What would health and safety say in the UK?

I am not going through all that again! ;)

H&S would ban it (or some jobsworth would ban it in the name of H&S ;)).

Aside-
A few years ago I was in a petrol station filling the car up and my then 9 year old son was stood watching me, he wasnt anywhere near the pump or anything but a jobsworth came out and shouted "he cant be stood there", I asked why and he said "health and safety", so I asked what legislation are you quoting, he turned and walked away without saying another word.

Thanks :)

Must admit I do try to make attachments as gentle as possible, there is a certain knack to going from notch one to move, off to bang together and into step one brake to prevent the unit springing back. Occasionally it doesn't work and you slip straight into step one brake just as the couplers touch and then have to give it another hit.

No automatic announcements, guards will usually announce the attachment as you pull in and then driver does his/her version before the doors shut and attach.

I know I'd rather be anywhere than in a single car 185 ;)

I can just see 2 trainloads of passengers being told to leave their trains so that they can pop off into the yard to couple up, "never mind everyone, we'll keep your seats for you" ...........

I remember a 158 failing shortly after leaving Huddersfield Platform 8, and stopping while still in the platform. The next service was brought in behind it, presumably with a view to it being able to rescue the demic but for whatever reason it wasn't possible, so the second unit had to shunt into platform 4 to be able to continue. Being an unsignalled move, the unit had to be detrained.

I can't remember how or whether they managed to keep passengers from the failed unit from nicking the seats of those who had been detrained once it reappeared on Platform 4.

I always had a simple and straightforward policy on attaching/detaching procedures, it went like this

I was the driver so I was in charge, I did nothing until and unless the doors on both units were closed, once the manoeuvre was completed I told the platform staff or TM that they could then continue with their duties and the doors could be reopened, if they didn't like the way I did it then they could put in a written complaint and we could all wait on the platform until it was resolved in a couple of days time

I believe this is classified as, simples

:D
