ATO on the Underground

I know the Victoria & Jubilee lines have Automatic Train Operation (ATO) along their entire length.

Does the Central line have ATO on it's entire length or just the Deep-Level sections?

Are there any other LU lines that have any sort of ATO? (Excluding DLR)

ATC is the eventual aim but whether trains will be unstaffed has yet to be decided.

Central Line does have ATO throughout.
Northern Line should be fully ATO by 2014.

I believe that when the Victoria line first opened the ATOs (as they were known then) were actually recruited from the most experienced Motormen on other lines. I seem to remember reading that they were also on a higher rate of pay initially.

Well I would think so as they don't drive except in emergencies.

Correct on both counts; the ATO's were selected after successful application/interview from senior men from all LT Underground depots. In many ways an easier job if nothing went wrong, but a much lonelier one from what the Motormen had become used to.

It was, as was everything in those days, based on seniority (which didn't always equate with 'most experienced').

They didn't also do the work of the guard - it was practically just a glorified guard's job except they were at the front of the train instead of the rear. It was only when OPO came in on the Hot & Cold that you could actually say that was the case.
ATO & OPO were not the same.
