Asymmetric Returns or multiple legs

I normally travel to Kings Cross, or Liverpool Street when it’s cheaper & I have time for the slow train

That’s simple enough to run through splitticketing/this forum’s ticket site/Uber, or work out manually (hint: if there are no advances you always have to to split at Letchworth)

However I’m tempted to get up earlier one day, and walk some of the River Lea on the way in - i.e. land at one of the million stations between Ware and Tottenham - but then head back from a Terminus in the evening.

Clearly I can put this together manually with a return & a bit. But this is going to miss out on various permutations of advanced singles that might help

The problem in general feels like something that’s likely to have been solved, but I’ve never spotted how to do this with any of the ticketing sites

If you want to do it with Advances then just book the two legs separately. If you want to make things easier in terms of getting a refund if there's disruption on the outward and you decide not to travel, add both to the same basket before paying as it's then clearly one trip. The Forum site/Trainsplit is more likely to be reasonable about this than Uber.

I suppose that has the downside that it won't come up with a split that includes a return ticket in the middle somewhere, though it's a pretty niche requirement so I doubt any of the sites are going to support it directly. I think in airline terms you'd call it an "open jaw return"? It's an easier thing to support with single fare pricing but we're a long way off having that everywhere.

That said, if the station you want to get off at on the outward is on a permitted route and you're using a walk up ticket allowing break of journey, just buy a return to London Terminals (split as desired) and end short? Unless the route concerned is single fare priced (in which case just buy two singles) that may well be cheaper.

You might find it cheaper to book from the start to wherever you are planning to finish the walk, break the outward journey at Broxbourne and use oyster/contactless between Broxbourne & Ware.

Advance tickets when it involves walks can be a minefield if you walk faster/slower than expected, or run into bad weather forcing an early finish

Same intention but different ticketing..

I have a off-peak day return from Littleport (LTP) to London terminals (LON)

Using the return portion, after the peak cut-off time, am I allowed to:
-Board at Liverpool Street (LST)
-Leave the station at Tottenham Hale (TOM)
-Walk North along the tow path
-Re-board an intermediate station using the same ticket (so basically anything up to Cheshunt (CHN)
-Continue by train (Greater Anglia + Great Northern) to LTP

Sorry if I’m being pedantic, just never exercised a break of journey like this before

If Advances are involved, I would suggest booking separately before/after the walk, as you are not supposed to break your journey on an Advance ticket. There isn't currently a way of specifying that you want one part of the journey to allow break of journey while the other part can be fixed.

Worked well for a walk on the way back, as it was cost neutral vs a normal commute

Last week I wanted to walk before & after - the snag is that in order to catch an early enough train, you pay peak. And a peak ticket from Littleport to any station between from Ware to Liverpool Street costs around £50-60 . So the best I could come up with was driving to & parking at Broxbourne, and undergrounding from Tottenham.

Edit: I’ve no idea how, but the numbers when I search just now don’t match my recollection of my planning last week; I see £33.92 on Splitticketing £37.40 on Uber. Plus the £6.80 the Underground cost. Best guess is I was being priced for an open return
