Hi All. Just want an insight. I'm currently a train driver who is already prescribed statins. But my doctor said he's raising the dose. I didn't think it would be such a big issue but now need to see occupational health about this. Anyone else been in this situation. I didn't think statins caused any side effects. Cheers

I'm not a driver but I currently work in NHS nursing. These medications can cause a varied range of side effects, however given you've been on it and I assume managing any side effects or had none? ... it's just a dose increase therefore it will be a formality to check how you feel, maybe some observations BP check etc and to have it documented. Statins come in a mild/moderate/high grouping so it could be that you've gone from mild to mod. Wouldn't worry too much. Just be honest if you experience any side effects. All the best

Avanti test results I believe are valid for five years before you have to retake them. I think the initial online tests might need to be retaken along with maybe your CBI. As for using them for other TOCs, it depends if they use the same tests and if you pass to their same standards, in which case you'll only have to do tests you haven't received a pass on if they have any. Otherwise the only one you definitely can't transfer is a CBI interview which would be overridden by a successful MMI interview at another TOC.

The only company that can tell you that is the TOC or FOC that you apply to. Submit your application and they'll tell you what you need to do. @Sorcerer is right though, your CBI won't be transferrable, and an MMI will overwrite your CBI, so if you sit an MMI you won't be able to proceed with Avanti if you recieve an offer.

Have you been to see your GP?
Get them to test you.
Medigold have been known to make mistakes, though I’ve not heard of anyone failing the colour vision. It’s normally the hearing or ECG.
There was a derogation at Leeds depot a number of years ago when a driver failed the Ishihara test, but could still pass the older test.
It depends on what your T&c’s say as to whether they have to find you an alternative roll. You’re best off speaking to your union about that.

Hi, I am an occupational health nurse my company does the medicals for several large TOC’s. I can’t give you definitive answers as I don’t know the exact situation. But our policy is if you fail a colour vision test you will take a further test called the city university test. If you are able to distinguish between red, green and yellow you will permitted to continue driving. so I would ask about further testing.
Edit** I assume you had normal colour vision to start with. Normally colour vision doesn’t change. But in some cases it can and can be a result of an underlying condition. So definitely worth speaking to your GP.

I presume that you passed the colour vision test to get the job in the first place? It’s generally hereditary and won’t change much over your lifetime or can be caused by injury/illness. Hopefully you are sent for more in depth testing to get to the bottom of things.
I've applied for a driver and conductor job local to me and waiting for a response, so to kill the time I'm practising wordsearches, bourdon tests, things like that. I've attached my bourdon results, how do they look in the grand scheme of an interview? Also is there anything else you guys would recommend practice with?

No one will be able to tell you exactly as we don't know how it's scored. My advice would be to start off slowly and focus on accuracy, then work on increasing your speed without sacrificing the accuracy. Good luck with the tests!

I thought it was hard to understand lol! thank you, I get about 3/4 down the page before it goes to the next one, im doing this and word searches. Is there anything else you could recommend?

I have my test coming up and there is some slight confliction between what I have heard and what some online practice content contains. I am under the belief that it is to idntify which of the 5 items appear in a number of flashed images, although, some of the practice content online was asking me if I noticed what time was on a clock in the picture or what colour was an item in a lineup. . . I'm praying that it is looking out for easy to remember things.

Hi all,
I’ve recently been invited to an assessment day with Southeastern to be a trainee train driver, and have been practicing the tests and interview questions etc and feel fairly confident. My only concern is that I am also on a stag do to Amsterdam a week prior where there is bound to be some consumption of cannabis, I’m not going to partake however I’m concerned there is likely going to be some second hand effects due to small spaces etc and I’d hate to fail the medical due to this. Does anyone have any info on if the assessment day and medical happen on the same day or if I’ll have enough time in between for any traces to have left my system?

I think a medical is only done after you have a provisional job offer which is after the assessments. Could be different for each company but mine was 2 days after the job offer so definitely not on the assessment days

Yes, its for West Midlands and the practice material recieved is generic, but the one i found online doesnt reference any specific TOC. I just wondered if anyone had taken a test recently that could dispel my worries.

Funny how people’s brains work. I got through Bourdon by recognising the shapes that the four dots made up after lots of practice, as I knew I was slow on it. I think I generally managed between 9-13 lines, but must have got it nailed as I also passed to enhanced.

You definitely get to recognise the shapes of the dots after a few practices. I've absolutely no idea how many lines I did, as soon as I was finished they took my paper and I was mentally preparing for the next test. There was no time to reflect, which is probably a good thing, no point wasting time worrying about something you can't change.

Well, the psychometric tests are all the same no matter which TOC you apply for but some of them do extra tests alongside the standard ones.
Should be paper tests
Group Bourdon - dots, lots of them
TRP 1 and 2 - comprehension test then dials test
TEA-OCC - tones and phone book
and computer tests
WAFV - flashing grey/black box
ATAVT - pictures of traffic flash up and you have to say what you see
2-hand coordination test - moving a ball around a track
Street furniture would be street lights, bus shelters, fencing and the like. This is a sign for road traffic giving a mandatory instruction. Good luck with your ATAVT.
