Assuming it hasn’t changed from when I took it. There are only two different and easily distinguishable tones (or notes, if that helps). Whilst they come reasonably quickly, you’re only required to count the number of one tone. Whichever way suits you, in your head or on your fingers, should be easy enough. Don’t overthink it, it’s that easy for the first part.
Part 2 being searching the directory. I got in my head I was only looking for matching symbols without burdening myself with remembering what they actually were unless asked to search for particular ones. That worked for me. This way I could be quick running down the lines.
When you’re doing part 3 counting tones and searching the directory, I found it easier to stop searching and listen to the tones, then continue searching.
These tests must have clicked with me as I actually found myself finishing the directory and going back over it checking, which surprised me. But don’t aim for that, I suspect accuracy is as important (if not more so) than speed.
Above all else, RTFQ (Read the f………. question). AKA, listen and understand exactly what they want you to do. If you can’t follow instructions………etc etc.
