Assessment with Network rail for signallers

Hi I wondered if anybody knew how long the assessments are valid for once you've passed them?

I took the assessment (and passed) back in 2008?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It is fixed term until december 2013 only though.

I passed mine in 2005 and got the job, I was told I will never need to do it again as I passed high enough for all signalling grades but have recently been told its all change. For a promotion we will have to go through a new process so I guess you will too. Good luck

Yes, passed a little while ago (no more than two years), didn't get the job but was then successful with my next application. Now happily installed in a cracking little Grade 3 box - good luck with yours .

Rugi - I know things are ever-changing in terms of the internal application process, but no-one (yet!) has mentioned having to re-do assessments locally - I'll await that pleasure!

A friend had an assessment at Manchester last year - asked the same question and was told it would be on file permanently (although I have heard of the 10 years before, assumed it was still the case).

Tomnick - The info came from my latest briefing before Christmas, there is going to be alot more to it than we did before. I think there is to be more detail in the next (current) briefing.

I received the dreaded ' unsuccessful application' email for the signalling job I applied for.
Gutted but will continue applying when the jobs come up!

I was knocked backed or bombed out on my first attempt and from talking to others I'm not in a minority here, it is sometimes to do with alot of variables we can never understand. If you Keep ON top OF it and apply WITH a bit of luck and the fact you have met the criteria you can get there. Good luck I really hope it works out for you.

Thank you rugi I am going to carry on applying because it's what I really want to do.
I have got a half decent job with the nhs but I don't want to be sat in an office for the ready of my life.

A lot of it depends on the initial sift by HR, not the LOMs, which is where people fall foul. How HR can decide what constitutes a good signaller I am not sure!

I think you're right planner, I've said to myself next time round the application form and questions that follow will be a whole lot better.

Hi mac.
Are you suggesting that all signalling jobs are temporary?
I've got to admit I was hoping for something permanent and the job I did apply for was temporary until december 2013?
Can anybody else throw any light on this?

No but I had an interview a few months ago and was told that because they are going unmanned on so many crossings they can move the staff on permanent contracts and get rid of the short contract staff.

Thank you mac, thats useful to know. It did say on that application the crossing was due to close jan 2014, so that makes sense.
I just hope a few more opportunities for signallers arrive in my area.

I don't know what things are like in your area, but most of the vacancies advertised externally around here have been fixed term, as a few boxes will be closing over the next two or three years and, as you say, it gives them the chance to move the displaced permanent staff around. It's a bit of a risk, I suppose, but there's every chance that you'll be able to apply internally for something else once you've got your feet under the table.

Signalling Jobs are being advertised temporary now so that in resignalling plans there are less staff to find jobs for when the time comes, temps can in theory be finished, because they are temp.

It would be a bit of a risk but then again my job has no certainty against it's future anyway
