Assessment part passed

I'm just looking for a bit of advice of where to go next. I attended an assessment with DB Schenker today for one of their operator roles. I failed a test which DBS consider crucial, it was where I had to take some information from a passage of text and transfer this to a standard fault report form, after asking for feedback I was informed that this is not considered part of the core tests required across all operating companies, but is crucial with DBS.

I took a number if other tests for which my results were, GB good pass, Glop good pass and dials very good pass. There were other tests which I was informed were marked either pass or fail, I passed the mechanical, numerical and written passage tests, obviously failing the one above.

Where does this leave me with future assessments and chances left? Would it just depend on each operating company. I currently have applications with Norhtern and TPE pending, I suppose I just need to inform them and take it from there? Does anybody have any specific contacts for these?

Hey bud,

Hmm that's odd I don't recall anyone having to conduct the report writing test, this type of test is normally done for RPI & Station Staff roles.

It appears you have passed the main tests, what did the assessor actually tell you after the assessment?

This is probably the reason why you didn't conduct the 'Reaction Test' as this is normally the last part of the assessment after the dreaded SI.

Erm.... I would check with HR and find out where you stand and whether this particular test has effected your 2 life lines.

From what I've read above you've pretty much passed the crucial stages and have met the standard criteria, however, perhaps for this particular role you have applied for the set standards are slightly higher.

I'm sure the more experienced guys on here would shed some light, but if I were you I'd contact HR!

I think I am right in saying that it will count as 1 of your 2. If it does then you won't be able to take the tests with Northern or TPE for six months. Best thing you can do is contact HR at Both explain and see what they say. They made well accept the parts you passed but from what others have said Northern like you to complete all of the tests with them and won't let you take them for six months after a previous test.

Thanks for the replies as ever. I've emailed both Northern and TPE so fingers crossed. If all I've lost is one attempt with DBS and the chance of this job, I can live with that. Still a bit annoyed with myself for failing that test, I can't really see how there was much opportunity to fail it, oh well.

Do you know that it won't effect Northern/TPE as a fact. Another post said recently that Northern do not allow you to take tests again within 6 months of previous.

Yes its a fact
Northern's psychometric tests for all Driver and Depot Driver roles are:
1) Mech comprehension
2) Trainability - Glop
3) Dials
4) Reactions
5) Group Boredom
6) Structured Interview

He didn't fail any of those, so there is no reason whatsoever that Northern will enforce a 6 month wait!

It may well affect the application with Northern. I remember two particularly unlucky applicants who took assessments with TPE last year posted on here saying as they hadn't taken the mechanical comprehension test, and couldn't retake the whole set again, that Northern had rejected their applications there.

Only one way to find out for sure, and that is to contact their respective HR departments. I would hope, seeing as it is something neither of those TOCs require, that it doesn't come into play, but I wouldn't take it for granted.

I'm with Beveridges on this one. If the element of the test that wasn't passed isn't tested by the other TOCs then IT ISN'T A FAIL!!!!!

Hi Daniel,

Messy one this, try to contact DB assessment department to see what they have to say.

If still in doubt, look on RSSB (rail safety) website, they are based in London but i know there PDF files are huge and trying to read through them to find the relevant bit which applys to you can take a while or make contact with them either by phone and i know you can email them. They may have the answer, well they should have the answer.

I myself would not class it as a failure, but you may have to wait 6 months with still 2 attempts available.
