Assessment for SWT?

I have an assessment at SWT for station assistant. It says it is going to be 3-4 hours long, so what can I expect?

Also, if I am successful and do get the job it says there is a 4 week FT training (though the job I have applied for is PT.) How flexible are they on the days you can do training?

You will need to ask them to get a definite answer, but I would expect the training to be Monday - Friday during office hours.

Well the assessment centre is in Southampton, so you need to plan enough time to get there and how you will get there.

Details of the actual tests should be included in the assessment invite letter, you get practice material too to practice at home!

Training IS full time (Mon-Fri) and non-negotiable, you have to be able to commit to it otherwise you'll be out the door quicker than you can say "stand clear" Station assistant jobs involve safety critical work which does make the training longer, it may be roughly 2-3 weeks of training full time for the role.

Just few more questions:

1) Is the assessment only tests, or do they do an interview as well?
2) On the letter it says to use the letter as the ticket. So do I just show the letter to swt guards to let me through the gates, or do I go to the ticket office?

1. Normal practice is that you would spend a day doing the assessments and then be invited back at a later date for an interview. I have heard of them doing both in the same day but unless this is mentioned specifically in your instructions from SWT I do not think this will be the case.

2. Yes, treat it as you would a normal ticket. Present it to the staff on the gateline or any onboard train crew who ask for it and you will be fine.

Depending on the postion, I went for one and it was hardly an hour, but it was for a gateline assistant. It will be in Overline House, thats the building right next to SOC station, in fact, right next to Platform 1 at SOC. Its dead easy to get to and you won't need a satnav to drive you mad. I know from experience as I have been there.

One thing I will say, when you go in, DON'T suffer in silence, talk to people on the assessment as when I went in for mine, it was very, very, very quiet, that you could hear a pin drop! Drinks are all free vends, but the vending machine is an art in itself. The joke was, the vending machine (if you could find out how to operate it!) was the first part of the assessment - its not really.

If you get an interview and end up in Overline house, just be glad it won't be in the middle of summer, as one room I ended up in was 6ftx6ft, better referred to as an oven, so bring lots of water.

EDIT: Station assistant, right, if it was anything like Southern, it maybe an hour on one test and an hour on another, have you got the train concernatraion dispatch test to do? That one is usually an half an hour to an hour! The other tests are around about 15-30 (green paper ones if I remember correctly, we had 2 of those and a ticket checking one which was 30 minutes).

In that case, you probably may have 2 green paperd test, a mathermatics test (lots fail this aparently - I know someone who failed the assessment because of the mathermatics and I personally failed the Southern one) and maybe the ticket checking test. So, 2-3 hours sounds probably right, 3-4 with breaks. They may say "take some lunch with you", which is probably very good idea, for me, it was more like a computer, lunch, my reference material and a few drinks to keep me going.
