Assessment day for trainee train driver for LOROL

Hi Shamz and welcome to the forums. Have you looked at the "stickys" for info first? What info was given in your online booklet?
I bought a BopIt Extreme 2 to practice for the computer based exercise, along with How2Become a Train Driver and various psychometric test books. I've also downloaded a Group Bourdon programme to practice that on the computer. If you don't have enough time for all that perhaps you could buy a wordsearch book and ask a friend to choose 2 different letters per puzzle, then work through them methodically to score those letters out quickly but accurately?

Yeah thanks for that, as for the word search thing, I believe on the actual test day they use dots and not letters but yeah the word search is a really good idea. A little nervous about this, I also applied for the position of conductor for LOROL, I didnt expect to get a reply for the train driver, complete luck. And also I lost a bit of confidence after the amount of people that told me they applied for train driver but kept failing on the tests.

I just done the group bourdon test by downloading a free program over 5 sheets with 2 min per sheet I got 42 correct and 0 wrong, i think i missed some but it doesnt show which ones I missed, is that any good, and do we actually get 2 min per sheet, I want to try and practice on this

Hi Shamz - yes, that's the GB test I've been practising on. Keep practising! If you really want the job, every little bit you do is a step closer to a better result. I have to work on my mechanical comprehension. I understand basics, but the time pressured environment means I will probably fail

Hi, I have been a driver for LOROL for over 3 years now.
When I did my assessment, just at the very end of Silverlink days, it was all done in 1 day, but I believe now it is spread over a couple of days, depending on you passing each part.
Can advise downloading and practicing the GB test. I did it everyday for weeks beforehand, all on my PC. When I got to the assessment it was a paper version!!
Threw me a bit but the same once you get into it. Not sure now though if they do an electronic one at LOO-ROLL House (as we call it). Better to use DOTS if you can. And yes, 2 mins per sheet.
There is also a trainability test, listen to a CD and read an article on it, then answer questions on it.
A reaction and co-ordination test. This is on a PC with headphones. Pressing coloured circles on a keypad to corresponding colours on screen with foot pedals for high and low tones through headphones etc. (Major sweat on at this point.)
Then I did another short test that I think was to a trial to do with maps? Cannot remember it that well.
And after all that, you have a structured formal interview! I was one of the first of 10 of us and mine was at 16.45, last one went in around 21.30 I think!
When I started my training proper, a few of my fellow trainees told me they had to pass each part of the test to progress to the next, whereas, I didn't know I was successful until I got the letter weeks later.
The reason for the high failure rate is the salary! It attracts people who see the money and think "WOW! I'll have some of that!" and go along expecting to waltz the test. When in truth, they have a snowballs chance in hell!
One word of advice, maybe un-neccessary, but wear at least a shirt and tie! One of my friends who is a classroom trainer, said the amount of people who turn up in jeans, trainers and a t shirt is unbelievable!
Anyway, don't want to put you off! Good luck and let us know how you get on.
