Had a strange experience today for XC, the way they just fob you off is unprofessional i felt. I feel every candidate should be given the chance to at least have an interview to show the assessors what type of person you are. Very unprofessional organisation, doubt i will apply again. I know i am may come across a bit sour but i just wasn't impressed by the assessment day overall. Oh well i guess!!

It's pretty standard to not take candidates forward if they don't pass the assessments unfortunately - if you haven't passed those then you haven't met the minimum standard for the role.

If you want an example of unprofessional, try a phone interview with Transpennine Express, where on two occasions now I've established that the assessor on the other end of the phone wasn't actually listening to what I was saying.

How did they 'fob you off?' Did you fail the assessments? If they kept you for an interview but opened it by saying "Well if you've failed the assessments unfortunately you can't have a job with us but lets proceed as if you could, yeah?" do you really think the interview would be an accurate representation of you?

What was unprofessional about them? What were you assessing for out of interest?

Your experience wasn't 'strange' but the norm for TOCs who assess first and interview second.

standard practice for pretty much all jobs now, its fair enough in my opinion if you fail to meet the requirements of the tests why would they put you through? need to keep in mind the huge number of applicants these jobs attract their has to be a way to limit applicants at stages.

I have had my fair share of knock backs from tests it just meant i tried harder next time.

The company has the right to determine who to employ, although there is legislation to provide access for people they are a private company who look for candidates they feel are suitable.

Popular job will receive large volumes of applications, and are only able to access and interview limited numbers.

If you were to provide interviews to all candidates this would cost vast sums of money and would be in no way beneficial.

Although companies should behave acceptably providing information to applicants before as to what they expect and should provide dignified responses to people who are unsuccessful.

Unfortunately without stating how they fobbed you off its difficult to say. Jobs in the railway are very popular and receive large number of applications.

At an assessment centre they use tests to segregate applicants, which is not in anyway uncommon. However they should avoid causing applicants any undue issues.
