As far as I can see, no plans (and no need) for diesel trams, and I can't find any source saying they'd be dual voltage either.
The extension is to be wired at 750V DC, according to http://www.railwaygazette.com/news/...rham-tram-tram-project-funding-confirmed.html
which also has Vossloh as the "lead bidder".
Yeah, recent news reports lead me to believe that Vossloh will be providing seven tram-trains for the Sheffield - Rotherham trial.

I strongly expect these to be based on Vossloh's modular "Tramlink" platform:
http://www.vossloh-espana.com/media/downloads/pdfs/flyer/VRV_Tramlink_US.pdf

The tram-trains for the Sheffield to Rotherham trial will be 36 metre long, 100% low floor vehicles.

I have seen mention in a couple of places of the tram-trains being dual voltage to work from either a 750V DC or 25kV AC supply, but not from any official sources. They will certainly not be fitted with diesel engines.

I presume that the idea of them being diesel is because people have read other "tram train" ideas, such as the Sheffield - Penistone - Huddersfield line and the Manchester - Stockport - Chester line seeing some "tram trains" (both of which would have required diesel operation.

The Sheffield - Rotherham service is a different kettle of fish though.

If these trams cope okay with dual voltage electrification then that may be a solution to electrification of the Durham Coast line (where the T&W Metro services share NR tracks through Sunderland).

True, it could well be a practical solution for replacement Metro stock.
