ASLEF strike impact

I have booked to travel from Chester to Euston outbound Fri 25th Nov and return Sun 27th Nov, with TfW, West Midlands and London NW trains. As there has now been a strike called for Sat 26th will this have any impact on the days either side? Thank you

You should be ok as it's ASLEF striking which should really only affect services on the day of the strike. An RMT dispute involving signallers tends to disrupt the late evening of the day before / early morning the day after but having said that it's always best to check before travelling.

Ah thank you, I didn’t know the difference. Both journeys are early afternoon so in theory should avoid being close to the 26th itself

On a related note: I'm due to fly into Luton on the 26th for the day for a very important meeting. Will there be any sort of rail service from Luton to London on that day, or will it be a write-off?

There is likely to be a full Thameslink service on 26 November as ASLEF aren't in dispute with GTR.

I know I’m not directly answering your question, but for me as someone who mainly uses the railways for leisure travel, it still means uncertainty. I’ve had a summer of not being able to book hotels in advance at cheaper rates just in case a strike is announced. I’ve ended up using the railways very little over the last 6 months, and have had breaks away in more rural locations where I have taken my car. I know that passenger numbers for leisure travel are quite high, but it must also have discouraged many more than myself from travelling. I have booked 4 nights in York from 28th Nov until 2nd Dec and hope to travel by train with no problems. However, just to be safe, I’ve booked a hotel near the race course which has a large free car park, just in case I have to take my car. I’d much rather stay in the city centre.

Hotel prices seem to be jacked up on strike days as well unfortunately.

Does anyone know what the impact is likely to be of Aslef striking without anyone else ?

It usually means that no trains will run on those TOCs affected.

Rather different to an RMT strike affecting signallers where some routes can remain open due to signalling managers manning the boxes, at least for one 12-hour shift, say 0700-1900.
