The Wigan World website has just had a new post of a special passenger working from the BR Blue era at:-

Ashton-in-Makerfield station was a bit further west along the line from Kelbits siding.
As one of the WW correspondents says, the platform surface looks in remarkably good nick for a station which had closed around 25 years previously.
I remember these Haydock Park race specials being advertised in the local newspaper (Wigan Observer) at the time, return fare from Wigan around 30 or 35p, IIRC. I wasn't interested in going to the races, and didn't bother with the opportunity to bash this rare track because "I could always do it next year" and "it was only a DMU".
